West Florida vs Florida International prediction: Joey Cantens opens FIU's new era against Division II champion West Florida
A first-year FIU coach gets his debut against a Gulf South champion under its own new coach, and last season's numbers say little about either team.
- FIU should control a home game against a Division II opponent, but a new coach and a reshaped roster make the script uncertain.
- Watch FIU's ball pressure: last season the Panthers ranked 28th nationally in forced turnover rate.
- No spread or total has been posted yet; FIU played at the 14th-fastest pace in Division I last season.
Two new coaches, one opener
This is a first night for both benches. Joey Cantens was named the 10th head coach in FIU history on March 20, replacing Jeremy Ballard, whose contract was not renewed after a 15-17 season. That season ended with a first-round Conference USA tournament loss to ninth-seeded Missouri State, and FIU is projected 10th in the league this year.
West Florida also changed coaches. The Argonauts hired Tanner Smith, formerly the associate head coach at Appalachian State, on April 7. He inherits a program coming off a Gulf South Conference tournament title and its first NCAA Tournament trip since 2018, and the school is preparing to move to Division I.
What last season's FIU tells us
Treat these as last season's numbers under a different staff. They describe a style, not a promise. FIU played fast, averaging 72.4 possessions per 40 minutes, which ranked 14th of 365. The defense lived on disruption. It forced turnovers on 20.6% of possessions, 28th nationally, and ranked 23rd in block rate.
The weak spots were just as clear. FIU grabbed only 66.4% of opponents' misses, 326th in the country, and made just 68.9% of its free throws. Its adjusted net efficiency, which measures points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions after adjusting for opponents, finished last season at -2.1, 194th of 365. Whether Cantens keeps that pressing, up-tempo identity is the first thing to learn on Nov. 6.
Roster questions
FIU added forward Ramone Seals, a transfer from Kennesaw State. Beyond him, the roster picture is murky, and no injury or eligibility news had surfaced for either team as of Oct. West Florida's rotation is unknown at this level.
