Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs Louisiana prediction: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's stingy defense tests a Louisiana offense still searching
Last season the Islanders defended like a top-20 team while Louisiana scored like a bottom-20 one, and the Ragin' Cajuns' second-year rebuild under Quannas White starts with that gap.
- Expect a low-possession, grind-it-out game where Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's defense sets the terms unless Louisiana's offense has changed since last season.
- The Islanders' ball security against Louisiana's ability to force turnovers; TAMUCC coughed it up at a 329th-ranked rate last season.
- No spread or total has been posted yet; last season's final adjusted net ratings had TAMUCC 176th and Louisiana 314th.
The Islanders' defense travels
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's identity last season was simple: make the other team miserable. The Islanders allowed 98.8 points per 100 possessions, 18th of 365 nationally, and held opponents to 30.2% from three, 19th in the country. They went 18-15 and pushed to the Southland semifinals before a 60-58 loss at Stephen F. Austin on March 10, sealed by Keon Thompson's layup with 12 seconds left.
Louisiana sits on the other end of that matchup. The Ragin' Cajuns scored 99.8 points per 100 possessions last season, 347th nationally, and their effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) ranked 345th. The interior was the worst of it: Louisiana made 44.9% of its twos, 357th. Against a defense that also kept opponents to a 48.2% effective mark, easy baskets were scarce for most teams last season, let alone this one.
The caveat is real. Both rosters have changed, and these are last season's numbers, not a forecast.
Possessions won and lost
The Islanders' weakness lived on their own end. They turned it over on 19.3% of possessions last season, 329th nationally, while forcing turnovers at a 19.9% clip, 44th. That made their games chaotic in both directions.
Louisiana forced turnovers at 18.4%, 100th nationally, one of the few areas where the Cajuns' defense held up. If they can turn Islander mistakes into transition chances, they skip the half-court possessions that sank their offense. On the glass, TAMUCC held the edge last season with a 72.9% defensive rebound rate, 53rd, against a Louisiana offense that grabbed 28.5% of its misses.
A game that lives at the line
Both defenses fouled constantly last season. Louisiana's opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 45.8%, 357th of 365, and TAMUCC's was 45.5%, 356th. Expect stoppages.
The Islanders got to the line plenty themselves, ranking 77th in free throw rate, but converted just 67.7%, 332nd nationally. In a tight game, that is the leak that could let Louisiana hang around. The Cajuns rarely earned trips themselves, ranking 333rd in free throw rate.
New faces, slow pace
Louisiana played at 63.8 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 347th nationally, and TAMUCC sat near the middle at 155th. A plodding game favors the better defense, which last season was clearly the visitors'.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, in Jim Shaw's third season, has reshaped its roster with transfers including Isaiah Lewis (Long Beach State), Jordan Mizell (Tarleton State) and Sebastian Robinson (NJIT), plus junior college additions Desmond Kent Jr. and Damarion Winston and freshmen Jacori Jones and Beau Billingsley. The Islanders' first public look comes at Island Madness on Thursday, Oct. 22.
Louisiana's player roster for 2026-27 hadn't surfaced in public listings, so who carries the Cajuns is an open question. White, hired after Bob Marlin was fired in December 2024, opens year two Nov. 2 against Akron in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, so this Friday night tip at the Cajundome (7:00 p.m. Central) will be Louisiana's second look at its new group. No injury or eligibility news has emerged for either team.
