Boston University vs Brown prediction: Boston University's sharpshooters test a rebuilt Brown under Eric Reveno

The Terriers made threes like few teams in the country last season, and Brown's best chance is turning a slow, careful game into a messy one.

Quick take
  • Expect a slow, half-court game where BU's shooting carries over unless Brown's pressure creates extra possessions for an offense that struggled to score last season.
  • Brown's ball pressure against BU's ball security: last season the Bears forced turnovers at a top-50 rate, while the Terriers ranked 247th protecting it.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Last season's adjusted net ratings had BU 261st and Brown 289th, a narrow gap.

A shooting team comes to Providence

Boston University's identity last season was simple: it made shots. The Terriers posted a 58.1% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times), 10th in Division I. They hit 39.3% from three, fifth in the country, and took plenty of them.

That sets up the central question at Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown's defense was its sturdy half last season, ranking 62nd in raw defensive efficiency, measured in points allowed per 100 possessions. But the Bears let opponents fire away, ranking 83rd in opponent 3-point attempt rate. Against a team that shoots like BU did, giving up volume from deep is a dangerous habit. Brown held foes to 32.8% from three, 130th, which was respectable rather than suffocating.

BU also beat Brown 90-77 last November in Boston. Rosters turn over every year, and the Bears have a new coach, so that result points in a direction without settling much.

Where Brown can steal possessions

If Brown has an edge, it lives in the turnover battle. The Bears forced turnovers on 19.8% of opponent possessions last season, 47th nationally, and their steal rate ranked 50th. BU was loose with the ball, ranking 247th in turnover rate.

The flip side cuts Brown's way too. BU's defense barely forced mistakes, ranking 353rd in forced turnover rate. That is a gift to a Brown offense that ranked 310th in its own turnover rate and needed every clean trip it could get. The Bears scored poorly last season, 323rd in offensive efficiency, and they were even worse in last season's final adjusted rating at 340th.

The Bears also get little help from the line. Brown ranked 347th in free throw rate and made 68.3% of its free throws. In a tight finish, that is a real liability.

A slow game with few possessions

BU played at one of the slowest paces in the country last season, 354th in possessions per 40 minutes. Brown sat in the middle of the pack at 214th. Fewer possessions favor the more efficient team, and last season that was BU's offense by a wide margin.

The Terriers' weakness was keeping teams out of the basket. Their adjusted defense ranked 345th last season, and opponents shot 36.4% from three against them, 340th. BU did finish possessions, ranking 70th in defensive rebound rate, which limits the second chances a struggling offense like Brown's would need.

New coach, young roster

This is the second game of Eric Reveno's first season at Brown. The Bears open at home against New Hampshire on Nov. 2, then host BU four days later. Reveno inherits a team that went 9-18 last season and was picked seventh in the Ivy League preseason poll.

Brown added six newcomers: five freshmen and Ray Cuevas, a transfer from Division III Bowdoin. No starters among the freshmen have been named.

BU, led by Joe Jones, went 17-17 last season and reached the Patriot League title game before losing 74-60 to Lehigh. The Terriers tied for third in the Patriot preseason poll, and senior guard Kyrone Alexander earned preseason all-league honors. No injuries or eligibility issues have surfaced for either team.

Because both programs have turned over parts of their rosters, read every number above as last season's baseline, not a forecast.
