Portland vs UT Arlington prediction: UT Arlington's three-point wall greets Portland in a Honolulu nightcap
Last season the Mavericks ran the stingiest perimeter defense in the country, and Portland's best offense came inside the arc anyway.
- Expect a grinding, turnover-heavy opener: UT Arlington's defense set the tone last season, while both offenses coughed the ball up often.
- Portland's two-point scoring against a Mavericks defense that held opponents to 26.7% from three, first in Division I last season.
- No line is posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings had UT Arlington 171st and Portland 216th.
The arc nobody wins
UT Arlington built its identity on taking the three-point line away. Last season opponents shot just 26.7% from deep against the Mavericks, the best mark of 365 Division I teams, and they rarely tried. Opponents' 3-point attempt rate ranked 356th, meaning almost nobody launched fewer threes against anyone.
That runs straight into Portland's weakness. The Pilots shot 30.2% from three last season, 345th nationally. Their offense worked from two-point range, where they hit 55.3%, 64th in the country, and they moved the ball well enough to rank 19th in assist rate. The Mavericks were good but less suffocating inside, holding opponents to 49.3% on twos, 88th.
The reverse matchup matters less than it looks. Portland's defense let opponents fire away, ranking 18th in opponent 3-point attempt rate, but UT Arlington shot just 29.1% from three, 359th. Neither team was built to punish the other from outside.
Turnovers and second chances
Ball security could swing this one, mostly because neither team had much. Portland turned it over on 19.5% of possessions last season (334th), and UT Arlington was worse at 20.3% (349th). The Mavericks also took the ball away, with a steal rate that ranked 77th.
UT Arlington made up for its poor shooting on the glass. It grabbed 36.1% of its own misses last season, 31st nationally, while Portland ranked 256th in defensive rebounding. Height cuts the other way: Portland's rotation averaged 79.9 inches weighted by minutes, against 76.9 for the Mavericks. If the Pilots' size finally shows up on the defensive boards, UT Arlington loses its best source of easy points.
Life at the line
The Mavericks drew fouls as well as they crashed the glass. Their free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked 34th last season, which made up for a half-court offense that ranked 328th in efficiency. Discipline was their flaw on the other end. UT Arlington allowed an opponent free throw rate that ranked 318th, which gives Portland a route to points that doesn't require making threes. In a game that could be a slow, low-scoring grind, a few extra trips to the line could decide it.
A late tip and a new league
This is the opener of the Rainbow Classic, a three-game round-robin running Nov. 6–9 at the Stan Sheriff Center, where each team also faces Bethesda. Tip is 10:30 p.m. Eastern on a neutral floor.
UT Arlington is about to debut in the United Athletic Conference after five years in the WAC. K.T. Turner, hired in March 2023, brings back a program that went 18-14 last season. Portland went 15-19 under Shantay Legans, and its last game was an 82-65 West Coast Conference tournament loss to San Francisco in March.
Last season's numbers are a rough guide, since early-season rosters change a lot. Portland's 2026-27 roster includes senior Kaia Isaac, a transfer from Tarleton State. Last season's ratings favored UT Arlington's profile. Its final adjusted net efficiency, or points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, was -0.5, against -4.5 for Portland. That gap came almost entirely from the Mavericks' defense, which ranked 58th in the adjusted numbers.
Numbers that matter
| UTA opponent 3-point % | 26.7% | Best in Division I last season, which targets Portland's weakest skill. |
|---|---|---|
| Portland 2-point % | 55.3% | Ranked 64th last season and is the Pilots' likeliest way to score against this defense. |
| UTA offensive rebound % | 36.1% | Ranked 31st last season, against a Portland defense that ranked 256th on the defensive glass. |
| UTA turnover rate | 20.3% | Ranked 349th last season, so Portland's chance to steal extra possessions is real. |
| UTA adjusted defense rank | 58th | Last season's final opponent-adjusted defensive rating and the core of the Mavericks' edge. |
