Virginia-Lynchburg vs Morgan State prediction: Morgan State's rebuilt roster gets a second look against Virginia-Lynchburg

With last season's leaders gone and a wave of transfers arriving, the Bears' second home game is about finding a rotation, not finding a winner.

Quick take
  • Morgan State should control this at Hill Field House, as it did in routs of VUL in 2022 and 2023.
  • Watch how Morgan State's newcomers share the ball with returners Wade and Edwards, both back from injury-shortened seasons.
  • No line was posted as of our feed. The last two meetings ended 120-50 and 123-59, both Morgan State wins.

A roster starting over

Morgan State finished 14-16 last season and second in the MEAC. The players who drove that run are gone: Rob Lawson and Walter Peggs Jr. are out of eligibility, along with Elijah Davis, while Eugene Alvin and Christian Meeks left the program.

Kevin Broadus has rebuilt through the portal. The newcomers include Darian Grant, Trey Pettigrew, a veteran guard from JCSU, Keith Richard, Khalil Horton, Oliver Spence, John Awoke, Jeremiah Kwarteng and Ibrahima Traore. Two returners matter as much as any addition. Wade, a junior, played just 14 games last season because of injury. Edwards missed all of 2025-26 for the same reason and is back. Neither has a current injury reported.

The Bears open Monday, Nov. 2, at home against Cheyney. That leaves this game, two days later, as a second chance to sort out who plays together.

Living at the line

Last season's Morgan State team had one standout habit: it got to the foul line. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 41.8%, 30th of 365 teams. It also made 74.2% of those tries.

The other side of that habit was ugly. Opponents drew fouls at a 50.0% rate, which ranked 362nd. The Bears also shot only 47.6% inside the arc, 339th nationally. Against an overmatched opponent, the useful signs are whether the new guards can score at the rim and whether the defense can stop fouling.

Pace and past routs

Morgan State played fast last season, averaging 70.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 56th in the country. Against Virginia-Lynchburg, that tempo has produced lopsided scores. The Bears won 123-59 in November 2022 and 120-50 in December 2023.

Virginia-Lynchburg is not a Division I program, and little is known about this season's roster. The tip time has not been confirmed.

Key players

  • Wade (Morgan State): Injuries limited him to 14 games last season, so a full workload would be close to new for him.
  • Edwards (Morgan State): He missed the entire 2025-26 season with an injury and returns as one of the few holdovers.
