Maryland Eastern Shore vs High Point prediction: High Point's ball hawks get a UMES offense that coughed it up

Maryland Eastern Shore had the worst turnover rate in Division I last season, and it opens at a High Point program that turned steals into a 31-5 year.

Quick take
  • High Point likely speeds it up, forces live-ball turnovers and pulls away, unless its rebuilt roster needs time to connect.
  • UMES guards against High Point's pressure: last season's worst turnover rate in Division I against a top-10 forced-turnover defense.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. High Point returns 31.7% of last season's minutes, so last season's gap is hard to price.

The turnover mismatch

Last season, Maryland Eastern Shore gave the ball away more often than any team in the country. Its turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) was 24.0%, which ranked 365th of 365. It was the main reason a 9-23 team had an offense ranked near the bottom of Division I.

High Point is the worst possible opponent for that problem. The Panthers forced turnovers on 22.3% of opponent possessions, seventh nationally, and their steal rate ranked second in the country. Those were live-ball steals, which turn into layups going the other way.

High Point also protected the ball itself, with a turnover rate that ranked third. If UMES can't get into its sets without losing possessions, the Panthers will have more scoring chances than the Hawks.

A champion's roster, mostly new

The caveat is that last season's High Point and this season's High Point are different teams. The Panthers return only 31.7% of last season's minutes. Terry Anderson and Rob Martin, who each scored 16.0 points a game, are gone. So are the starters from the run that included an 83-82 NCAA Tournament upset of Wisconsin before a 94-88 loss to Arkansas.

Flynn Clayman, entering his second season, rebuilt through the transfer portal, and the league voters liked the result. High Point was picked first in the Big South preseason poll. Cam'Ron Fletcher, who averaged 13.2 points in just 22.2 minutes with a 61.1% effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times), was named Preseason Player of the Year.

Jason Rivera-Torres arrives from Monmouth, where he averaged 15.8 points and 2.1 steals last season. He fits the pressure scheme. He and South Florida transfer CJ Brown made the preseason all-conference first team, and Oakland's Isaac Garrett made the second team. How quickly five transfers learn to press together is the real unknown in November.

Getting to the line

High Point's offense lived inside and at the stripe. The Panthers made 58.8% of their twos, 17th nationally, and their free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked 36th.

That runs straight into UMES's biggest defensive weakness. The Hawks allowed a 41.6% opponent free throw rate, which ranked 329th. Their defense was otherwise respectable for a team with that record; its efficiency ranked 158th. Fouling turned that into easy points for opponents.

The Hawks also struggle to keep up when they fall behind. They shot 30.0% from three last season, 349th in the country, so a comeback from a big deficit seems unlikely.

Whose tempo wins

The two programs want very different games. High Point averaged 71.3 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 32nd nationally. UMES played at 64.5, which ranked 324th.

UMES's best chance is a slow, half-court game with fewer possessions, which limits High Point's edge in talent. But turnovers create transition chances, so the Hawks' ball-handling decides the pace as much as their choice does. In UMES's last game, an 83-76 overtime loss to North Carolina Central in last season's MEAC Tournament, Cleo Hill Jr.'s team showed it can stay close in a grind. Doing that at the Qubein Center against this defense is a much harder task.

What to watch - UMES turnovers in the first 10 minutes, before High Point's pressure wears it down - Rivera-Torres and Brown sharing the ball in their first meaningful minutes together - Fletcher's minutes, which were limited last season
