Christendom vs App State prediction: App State opens Kerns' seventh season testing its shaky jumpers against Christendom

Against a small USCAA program, the useful question in Boone is whether last season's poor shooting from deep and at the line has been fixed.

Quick take
  • App State should control the game with its defense and a deliberate pace; the margin depends on how many of its threes fall.
  • Watch App State at the line: last season it shot 64.2% on free throws, 363rd of 365.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season's pace of 64.3 possessions, 330th, should shape any total.

A mismatch with one real question

Christendom comes to Boone from the Eastern States Athletic Association, part of the USCAA, well below Division I. The Crusaders' current roster lists eight men, among them senior guard Bobby Vander Woude and freshman guard Luke Vander Woude. That is a thin rotation to bring into a Sun Belt arena.

The Wednesday, Nov. 4 opener matters more as a first look at App State. Dustin Kerns begins his seventh season after a 19-13 finish last season.

The defense travels

Last season App State won with defense. It allowed 102.3 points per 100 possessions, 47th nationally. Opponents posted a 46.4% effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times), 21st in the country. Inside the arc, opponents shot 45.8%, 17th. The Mountaineers didn't gamble for steals. Their forced turnover rate ranked 330th, so they got stops by contesting shots and finishing possessions.

They also played slowly. Last season's pace of 64.3 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 330th of 365, which caps how big a score can get even in a lopsided game.

The shooting problem

The flaw last season was finishing plays. App State took plenty of threes. Its 3-point attempt rate of 46.0% ranked 47th, but it made only 30.3%, 342nd. The free-throw line was worse. The Mountaineers earned trips often but shot 64.2%, third-worst in Division I.

Inside, they were sharp: 55.7% on twos, 55th, plus a 34.5% offensive rebound rate that ranked 68th. Against Christendom, the minutes that count are the jumpers and free throws. Those show whether this roster has fixed last season's weak spot.

Numbers that matter

Defensive efficiency (last season)102.3Points allowed per 100 possessions, 47th nationally, and the base App State built on.
3-point % (last season)30.3%Ranked 342nd despite a high volume of attempts, the number to watch early.
Free throw % (last season)64.2%363rd of 365, a problem in any close game later this season.
Pace (last season)64.3Possessions per 40 minutes, 330th, keeping game totals low.
