Erskine vs UNC Asheville prediction: UNC Asheville opens Kimmel Arena against Erskine with free throws in focus
The Bulldogs' home opener against a non-Division I visitor is a first look at how three transfers fit a team that lived at the line but missed too often there last season.
- UNC Asheville should control a home opener against Erskine; the interest is in rotations and new pieces, not the outcome.
- Watch the free-throw line: last season the Bulldogs drew fouls at a top-65 rate but shot only 68.7% once there.
- No spread or total posted yet; last season UNC Asheville played at 66.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 240th nationally.
A home opener with a tune-up feel
UNC Asheville comes home to Kimmel Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 4, two days after it opens at Richmond. Erskine, from Conference Carolinas, is the Bulldogs' first home opponent, and the visit gives Mike Morrell a night to sort out a rotation before the real tests arrive.
The Big South expectations are modest. The Bulldogs were picked fifth in the league's preseason poll, with High Point first. That is the same High Point team that ended Asheville's season in the Big South semifinals, 75-71 in March.
Living at the line, missing there
Last season's profile had one clear strength and one clear leak, and they sat in the same spot. Asheville's free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) was 39.4%, 65th in Division I. Yet the Bulldogs made just 68.7% of those attempts, 306th.
Ball security was the other drag. Their turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) of 17.9% ranked 265th. A night against a lower-division opponent is a chance to see whether either number looks different with new hands on the ball.
Three transfers to watch
The backcourt gets two redshirt sophomore additions: Ja'Corey Lipkins from Purdue Fort Wayne and Jermaurhiyun Anderson from Louisiana Tech. Sophomore forward Abou Magassa arrives from Wyoming.
Last season's numbers are only a rough guide to this group. The Bulldogs went 15-17 and finished with an adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) of -6.1, 233rd nationally. How much of that roster returns isn't known, so early minutes for the newcomers will say more than last season's table does.
