South Alabama vs UCF prediction: Dior Johnson leads UCF's transfer-built roster against a rebuilt South Alabama
Both programs return less than a fifth of last season's minutes, so this early-season game comes down to which coach's system absorbs its newcomers faster.
- Expect UCF's deeper transfer group to try to push the pace at home against a South Alabama team that played at one of the slowest tempos in Division I last season.
- Watch Dior Johnson, who scored 24.0 points per game at Tarleton State last season, against a Jaguars team that ranked fourth in opponent free throw rate last season.
- No line is posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings, UCF 58th and South Alabama 203rd, are the clearest starting point.
Two teams starting over
Both teams finished 21-12 last season, and almost none of that matters now. UCF returns 17.8% of last season's minutes. South Alabama returns just 11.6%. Team stats from 2025-26 describe players who are mostly gone, so the useful evidence is who arrived and who stayed.
UCF reloaded through the portal. Dior Johnson averaged 24.0 points at Tarleton State last season while using 37.9% of his team's possessions when on the floor, a true go-to scorer's load. Lewis Walker added 18.9 points a game at North Carolina A&T, and Cayden Vasko ran Wofford's offense with 4.1 assists a game. Up front, Isaiah Malone and Churchill Abass blocked 1.9 and 1.7 shots a game at their previous stops. UCF's minutes-weighted average height is 79.5 inches.
The Knights already have one test on film. In an Oct. 28 exhibition at No. 23 Kentucky, UCF erased a double-digit deficit and took a late lead before losing 90-76 in overtime. For a group this new, that's an encouraging first look.
South Alabama's thin returning core
The Jaguars lost their engine. Chaze Harris scored 19.1 points a game last season and has moved on, and Adam Olsen took his 16.6 points a game to Auburn. What's left is mostly frontcourt efficiency. Peyton Law scored 12.8 points a game over 10 starts last season, and Stephen Williams shot 65.7% from the field off the bench.
Richie Riley, in his ninth season, signed transfers in the spring, including Jalen Langsy. None of them has a public track record in this setting yet, and the Jaguars have no reported results this fall. That leaves more unknowns on the South Alabama side than the UCF side.
A tempo tug-of-war
Players changed, but the coaches did not. Johnny Dawkins is in his 11th season at UCF, and his team played at 69.9 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 76th fastest in Division I. Riley's Jaguars played at 64.3, ranked 330th, among the slowest in the country.
That gap is the biggest style question here. If South Alabama drags the game into the half court, it shortens the night and limits how many chances UCF's scorers get. If UCF's guards set the speed at home, the Knights' talent edge has more possessions to show up.
Where possessions get won
South Alabama's identity last season was not wasting trips. The Jaguars turned it over on 13.1% of possessions, fifth best in Division I, while UCF's defense forced turnovers at a rate ranked 259th. South Alabama also kept opponents off the line, with an opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked fourth.
The Jaguars' weakness was the glass. Their offensive rebound rate (share of their own misses they recover) ranked 343rd, while UCF's ranked 56th. With Malone, Abass and returner John Bol, who shot 71.7% last season, the Knights have the size to keep that edge. One more note for a close finish: South Alabama shot 65.8% from the line last season, 357th nationally.
What the ratings say
Raw numbers flattered South Alabama last season. The Jaguars' net efficiency ranked 113th, ahead of UCF's 178th. Adjusted for the opponents each team faced, the order flips sharply. In last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, opponent-adjusted), UCF ranked 58th in net efficiency and South Alabama ranked 203rd.
Those ratings come from last season's rosters, so they are a rough guide. Still, UCF brings the more proven incoming talent, the bigger frontcourt and a home floor.
