SE Louisiana vs Auburn prediction: Auburn's rebuilt frontcourt seeks answers against SE Louisiana in opener

Florida State pushed the Tigers' new big men around in an exhibition, and a Southland team that rarely made a three gets the first regular-season look at them.

Quick take
  • Auburn's edges on the glass and at the line should decide this, unless SE Louisiana's poor shooting from last season has improved.
  • Thomas Dowd, Bukky Oboye and Auburn's new bigs against the Lions' defensive rebounding, after Florida State outmuscled them.
  • No line is posted yet; last season's final adjusted net ratings put Auburn 35th and SE Louisiana 283rd.

A roster built in one offseason

Auburn's opener comes with a question its first exhibition didn't answer: who controls the paint? Florida State beat the Tigers 82-71 in Birmingham on Oct. 14. Steven Pearl, entering his second season, had called big men Narcisse Ngoy and Bukky Oboye "difference-makers" before the game. Afterward he said they got "punked." SE Louisiana is their first chance to show that was a preseason blip.

The roster is mostly new. Players back from last season account for just 34.5% of last season's minutes, so last year's team numbers are a loose guide. The two returning starters hold the backcourt. Kevin Overton shot 41.3% from three last season, and Tahaad Pettiford scored 15.4 points a game. The frontcourt arrived by transfer: Thomas Dowd averaged 10.1 rebounds at Troy, and Adam Olsen hit 102 threes at South Alabama. Auburn sits 25th in preseason rankings.

The Lions' shooting problem

SE Louisiana went 9-22 last season, and the offense was why. The Lions made 28.3% of their threes, 362nd in Division I. Their offensive efficiency, points scored per 100 possessions, ranked 355th. David Kiefer, now in his eighth season, brings that profile to Neville Arena for the first of three SEC games in Southeastern's first four, a first for the program.

The Lions' opening is Auburn's defense, if last season's version returns. Opponents shot 36.7% from three against the Tigers, 347th nationally. Auburn's defensive efficiency ranked 314th. With this much roster turnover, that tells you more about the risk in Auburn's scheme than about this group.

Extra possessions favor Auburn

Auburn's clearest edge last season came from extra chances. The Tigers grabbed 36.9% of their own misses, 21st nationally. SE Louisiana's defensive rebounding ranked 238th. Auburn also lived at the line: its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked 14th. The Lions' opponent free throw rate ranked 311th, which means they sent opponents to the line often.

SE Louisiana can push back in the turnover battle. The Lions forced turnovers on 19.4% of possessions, 55th nationally. Auburn protected the ball well, though, giving it away 14.8% of the time, 47th. Last season's roster built those rebounding and foul-drawing numbers. Whether Dowd, Oboye and company can rebuild them after the Florida State game is the test.

Health and eligibility questions

In mid-October, Auburn was not whole. Owen Freeman, the Creighton transfer, is working back from a foot injury. Around Oct. 13, Pearl said Freeman had a 45-minute workout and looked bouncy, but that the staff would not rush him. Kolby King was hurt in the Florida State exhibition, and no update on his status had surfaced as of Oct. 17. International signee Mantas Rubštavičius had not been cleared by the NCAA for that game.

Auburn played only 10 players against the Seminoles, though Pearl says 13 can play meaningful minutes. The upcoming preseason Iron Bowl exhibition against Alabama on Oct. 22 should clarify the rotation. No availability news has surfaced for SE Louisiana.
