Regent vs Old Dominion prediction: Adante' Holiman and Old Dominion's new faces get a Division III tuneup

Regent's visit two nights after the opener is less a test than a chance for Mike Jones to sort a remade rotation in front of the home crowd.

Quick take
  • Old Dominion should control a Division III visitor at Chartway Arena and use the night to spread minutes across its newcomers.
  • Watch Adante' Holiman, the Arizona State transfer named Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, and how quickly the new guards share the ball.
  • No spread or total has been posted. Last season the Monarchs played at 70.2 possessions per 40 minutes, 64th fastest nationally.

A rebuilt roster gets reps

Old Dominion enters 2026-27 with a new look. Mike Jones added transfers Adante' Holiman (Arizona State), Khoi Thurmon (Oakland) and Bubu Banjamin (George Washington), plus forward Jotham Nweke and first-years CJ Harper, Theo Gerges, CJ Lyons and Noah Eddy.

Holiman carries the headline billing as a Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team pick. The league's coaches were less sold on the group as a whole: they picked the Monarchs 11th, with 76 points. A home date with Regent, a Division III program, is the kind of game where Jones can find out which of those newcomers he trusts before conference play arrives.

What last season left to fix

Last season's 12-21 team finished 248th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), and two weaknesses stood out. The Monarchs sent opponents to the line constantly: their opponent free throw rate ranked 330th. They also rarely got second chances, ranking 329th in offensive rebound rate (the share of their own misses they grabbed back).

The shooting gave them something to build on. Old Dominion made 35.4% of its threes, 97th nationally. With so many new players, last season's numbers are only a rough guide, but against a smaller-college opponent the foul count and the work on the offensive glass are worth tracking.

Schedule and setting

This is the second game of the season for Old Dominion, coming two nights after the opener against Western Michigan on Nov. 2. That leaves little rest, but a Division III visitor shouldn't demand heavy minutes from anyone.

Regent arrives under a new head coach. Barry Hollenbeck was promoted from associate head coach in March. No Old Dominion injuries are known heading into the game, though that could change before tipoff.
