Presbyterian vs Georgia prediction: Georgia's rebuilt Bulldogs set to test Presbyterian's shaky ball security

A transfer-heavy Georgia that loved to run last season gets a Big South contender that turned the ball over too often to keep pace.

Quick take
  • Georgia should push the tempo and turn Presbyterian mistakes into transition points, while the Blue Hose try to slow it down and win the glass.
  • Presbyterian's ball handlers against Georgia's hands: the Blue Hose ranked 333rd in turnover rate last season.
  • No line posted yet; Georgia ranked 11th in pace last season, Presbyterian 261st, so the tempo fight should shape any total.

Pace against patience

Georgia was a track meet last season. The Bulldogs ranked 11th nationally in pace at 72.7 possessions per 40 minutes, while Presbyterian sat 261st and preferred to grind.

The visitors' bigger issue is what happens once they have the ball. The Blue Hose turned it over on 19.4% of possessions last season, which ranked 333rd in Division I. Georgia forced turnovers at an 18.6% rate, 93rd nationally. It also ranked 70th in steal rate, and steals are the turnovers that start fast breaks.

That is the quickest way for this game to get away from Presbyterian. A fast team needs live-ball mistakes to play at its own speed, and last season's Blue Hose supplied plenty of them. Last season's final adjusted ratings, which measure efficiency against the quality of the opponent, put Georgia 31st and Presbyterian 263rd. Both rosters have changed, but that gap is the starting point.

A rotation built on transfers

These are not last season's Bulldogs. Georgia returns only 44.2% of last season's minutes, so its team numbers from a year ago are a loose guide at best. The biggest loss is Jeremiah Wilkinson, who averaged 17.4 points before leaving for Arkansas. Center Somto Cyril, the anchor of a defense that ranked 12th in block rate, is now at Miami.

The returning core is guards and wings. Blue Cain started every game, and Marcus Millender shot 38.9% from three. Kanon Catchings started almost every game on the wing. The biggest new piece is Penn State transfer Freddie Dilione V, who scored 14.0 points a game with a heavy share of his team's possessions. Saint Louis transfer Brady Dunlap hit 45.1% of his threes off the bench. James Scott (Ole Miss) and Andrew Osasuyi (St. Bonaventure) will try to replace Cyril's shot blocking.

Mike White has talked about the roster's "unique mix." The early returns are encouraging: Georgia beat Georgia State 94-61 in an exhibition and then handled Charlotte 87-67 on Oct. 17. Georgia has no injuries listed as of Oct. 17.

Where Presbyterian can hang around

The Blue Hose have a real counter on the glass. They grabbed 33.9% of their own misses last season, 84th nationally. Georgia ranked 346th in defensive rebound percentage, the share of opponents' misses a team collects. If the new Bulldogs frontcourt hasn't fixed that, extra possessions can offset some of Presbyterian's turnovers.

Presbyterian also lived at the line, ranking 57th in free throw rate (free throws attempted per shot). Turning those trips into points was the problem: it shot 68.5% from the stripe, 311th. Don't expect many threes. The Blue Hose ranked 357th in 3-point attempt rate, so they will look to score inside and on the offensive glass.

A contender's early road trip

Presbyterian went 15-18 last season, but the Big South coaches picked it second this year, the program's best preseason ranking. Coach Quinton Ferrell returns 11 letterwinners, led by preseason first-team all-conference picks Jaylen Peterson and Carl Parrish. Triston Wilson made the second team. The Blue Hose play an exhibition at Clemson on Oct. 28. A trip to NC State on Nov. 10 follows this one.

Georgia was picked 11th in the SEC and placed no one on the preseason all-conference teams. It will have played North Carolina Central on Nov. 2 before this game. The tip time hasn't been announced.
