Ecclesia vs Central Arkansas prediction: Ty Robinson steps into Camren Hunter's shots as Central Arkansas opens

A tune-up against NCCAA Ecclesia is really Central Arkansas's first look at who replaces a 21-point scorer before Arkansas arrives on the schedule.

Quick take
  • Central Arkansas should control a Division I versus NCCAA mismatch at home; the interest is in how the shots get redistributed.
  • Watch Ty Robinson's volume: he shot 37.4% on 203 threes last season and now inherits a bigger role.
  • No spread or total has been posted yet; last season's 49.2% three-point attempt rate (20th) is the style number to know.

The shots Hunter left behind

Central Arkansas went 22-12 last season, and Camren Hunter was the engine: 21.0 points a game on a 30.4% usage rate, the share of possessions he finished. He is gone, and players on this roster account for only 50.9% of last season's points. That makes last season's team numbers a loose guide.

The obvious heir is Ty Robinson, who started all 34 games as a redshirt freshman and posted a 124.6 offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions). Against an Ecclesia team from the National Christian College Athletic Association, Tuesday is a low-pressure chance to see how much more he can carry.

A defense built on gambles

Last season's Bears lived on the perimeter at both ends. They took threes on 49.2% of their shots, 20th-most in the country, and opponents fired away even more often against them, with a 52.6% attempt rate that ranked 2nd. Inside, the defense was soft: opponents made 56.7% of their twos, 350th of 365.

What kept it afloat was pressure. Their 12.4% steal rate ranked 27th, and Robinson and Luke Moore were the main thieves. Against a smaller-college backcourt, that should travel.

Bigger dates ahead

John Shulman, in his third season, has a team UAC coaches picked to win the league in its first year there, with four first-place votes, the most of any team. Three days after this 7:30 p.m. ET tip at the Farris Center, Central Arkansas faces Arkansas at Bud Walton Arena on Nov. 13. Expect Shulman to use this game to sort a rotation that includes Utah State transfer Tucker Anderson. The freshman and starter picture remains unconfirmed.

Key players

  • Ty Robinson (Central Arkansas): Averaged 14.2 points last season and shot 37.4% from three on 203 attempts.
  • Luke Moore (Central Arkansas): Logged 29.7 minutes a game last season with 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals.
  • Cole McCormick (Central Arkansas): Posted a 119.7 offensive rating last season while averaging 9.1 points.
  • Tucker Anderson (Central Arkansas): Shot 36% on 50 three-point attempts at Utah State last season in 11.7 minutes a game.

Numbers that matter

Returning minutes56.7%Barely more than half of last season's minutes are back, so last season's profile is a rough guide.
Hunter's usage30.4%The share of possessions the departed star finished last season now has to go somewhere.
Steal rate12.4%Ranked 27th last season and should be the Bears' biggest edge over a smaller-college opponent.
Opponent 2-point %56.7%Ranked 350th of 365 last season, the weak spot in an otherwise pressing defense.
