Eastern Washington vs Oregon prediction: Tony Stubblefield's Oregon debut tests a Duck roster nobody has seen

Dana Altman's sudden retirement leaves an interim coach and a rebuilt roster facing an Eastern Washington team that has turned over just as much and was picked third in the Big Sky.

Quick take
  • Two unfamiliar rosters feel each other out; Oregon's home floor matters more than anything last season's numbers say.
  • Alton Hamilton IV against Oregon's frontcourt: Eastern's efficient returning forward against a Duck defense that blocked shots well last season.
  • No line has been posted. Last season's adjusted net ratings, Oregon 99th and Eastern Washington 192nd, are the only market baseline available.

Life after Altman starts here

Three weeks before the season, Oregon lost its head coach. Dana Altman retired effective immediately on Oct. 7, and assistant Tony Stubblefield will run the program for 2026-27 while a national search waits until the season ends. Stubblefield's career record as a head coach is 30-66.

He inherits a program coming off a 12-20 season that finished third to last in the Big Ten, and a roster that churned hard: nine players left through the transfer portal and three more graduated. Kwame Evans Jr. is now at Villanova and Jackson Shelstad at Louisville. Stubblefield's first game on the sideline was an exhibition against Seattle, so this regular-season game is one of his earliest looks at what this group can be.

The health picture is clean for now. No Oregon injuries were listed as of Oct. 17.

Eastern Washington's new core

Eastern Washington also rebuilt. Only 26.5% of last season's minutes return, and the Eagles lost leading scorer Isaiah Moses, who averaged 17.8 points. That makes last season's 14-19 team a weak guide.

The man who is back is the reason for optimism. Alton Hamilton IV averaged 13.5 points on 57.2% shooting and earned preseason all-Big Sky honors, as did teammate Cook. Dan Monson, in his third season, added five transfers and two freshmen. The most proven is Jalen Griffith, a guard from Western Michigan who hit 41.6% of his threes last season. Emmett Marquardt is a floor-spacing forward who made 29 threes and 86.4% of his free throws last season.

The Big Sky coaches and media both picked the Eagles third, a sign the league thinks the new pieces fit.

What last season still hints

Read these as tendencies of programs, not of these rosters. Eastern Washington's defense was the problem: it ranked 323rd of 365 in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions) and let opponents make 55.9% of their twos, 339th nationally. If that habit carries over, Oregon can score inside even with new faces.

Oregon's issue was the other end. The Ducks ranked 265th in offensive efficiency and shot 32.1% from three, 290th, while still letting it fly often. The program's one defensive strength was rim protection: a block rate of 11.7% on opponent twos ranked 61st. That matters against Hamilton, who does his damage near the basket.

The opponent-adjusted numbers favored Oregon last season, with an adjusted net efficiency of 7.2 against Eastern's -2. Much of that gap reflected a Big Ten schedule, and most of the players who built it are gone.

Tempo and the empty board

Eastern Washington played a bit faster last season, at 68.5 possessions per 40 minutes against Oregon's 66.1, which ranked 267th. Neither extreme suggests a track meet, but an Eagle group built around shooters like Griffith may push.

No spread or total has been posted, and the tip time is still unsettled. Without a line or a single regular-season game from either side, the first number the market hangs will be built on reputation and conference strength more than evidence.

What to watch - Who Stubblefield trusts in his rotation, and how deep it runs. - Whether Hamilton can score through Oregon's size. - Griffith's volume from three against an Oregon defense that allowed plenty of attempts last season.
