East Tennessee State vs NC State prediction: Justin Gainey's NC State shooters face an ETSU defense that invites threes

In Gainey's first season, NC State's returning marksmen get an early look at a Buccaneers defense that let opponents fire away from deep but rarely let them get hot.

Quick take
  • NC State's returning shooters and Ven-Allen Lubin's interior finishing should carry a reshaped Wolfpack against a Buccaneers roster that hasn't been publicly detailed.
  • Paul McNeil Jr.'s 42.7% three-point shooting last season against an ETSU defense whose opponents shot heavily from deep.
  • No line is posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings put NC State 34th and ETSU 145th.

A shooting team, a defense that dares

Justin Gainey spent five seasons on Rick Barnes' staff at Tennessee. Now the former Wolfpack guard is back in Raleigh, replacing Will Wade, who left for LSU. His first home weeks bring an ETSU team whose defense poses a specific question: can you make enough threes to punish it?

Last season, ETSU's opponents took 47.8% of their shots from beyond the arc, the ninth-highest share in Division I. The Buccaneers lived with that and mostly won the bet, holding opponents to 32.3% from three, 89th nationally.

NC State is built to call that bluff. The Wolfpack shot 38.8% from deep last season, ninth in the country, and the two best volume shooters are back. Paul McNeil Jr. made 42.7% of his threes on 246 attempts. Darrion Williams hit 40.4% while starting all 33 games he played. If ETSU sags and concedes the arc again, those two decide how comfortable Friday night gets.

Who runs the offense now

The returning shooters mask a real hole. Quadir Copeland, who averaged 6.5 assists last season, is gone, as is fellow starter Tre Holloman. Matt Able left for North Carolina. NC State brings back 63.1% of last season's minutes, but almost none of its playmaking.

That matters because the Wolfpack's offense was built on care with the ball. Their turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions) was 13.6% last season, 12th nationally. ETSU attacks exactly that: its steal rate ranked 16th in Division I.

The early signs are encouraging. Newcomers Preston Edmead and Darius Adams made strong first impressions in their debuts during the Oct. 18 exhibition, a 77-73 comeback win over Mississippi State in Greensboro. Whether they can protect the ball against a pressing, active backcourt is the clearest test this game offers.

Lubin and the size gap

Inside, Ven-Allen Lubin is the most efficient returning piece. He shot 66.8% from the floor last season and grabbed 7.1 rebounds a game. He also stayed out of foul trouble in the exhibition, a point Gainey raised afterward.

ETSU's interior defense is the softer target. Opponents made 51.8% of their twos against the Buccaneers last season, 211th nationally. NC State also carries more size: its minutes-weighted average height is 78.7 inches to ETSU's 76.7. Neither team crashed the offensive glass much last season, so first-shot scoring near the rim should count heavily.

The Buccaneers' unknowns

ETSU went 23-11 last season under Brooks Savage, and its season ended with a 76-61 loss to Furman in the SoCon tournament final, with the Buccaneers scoring 61. That team scored efficiently, ranking 34th in effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times) and 28th in two-point accuracy.

How much of that carries over is the open question. ETSU's current roster hasn't been confirmed publicly, and there is no word on its injuries, transfers or freshmen. Treat last season's Buccaneer numbers as a loose guide.

The same caution applies to NC State's defense, which allowed 113.3 points per 100 possessions last season, 299th nationally, under a coach who has since left. NC State's injury report was clean as of Oct. 17. The Wolfpack host Campbell on Nov. 2 before this one, which should offer a first real look at Gainey's rotation.
