Austin Peay vs Kennesaw State prediction: Kennesaw State's whistle-heavy style could turn Austin Peay's visit into a free-throw contest

The Owls drew fouls at an elite rate last season and committed them at nearly the worst rate in the country, which makes a free-throw game the likeliest path for both teams.

Quick take
  • Expect a choppy, foul-heavy game: Kennesaw State attacks the rim and defends it hard, while Austin Peay hunts steals.
  • Simeon Cottle against Austin Peay's ball pressure; the Owls guard who shot 86.8% at the line last season sets the tone.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Austin Peay's pace last season, 70.7 possessions (48th), is the best early clue for the total.

A game played at the line

Kennesaw State's identity last season ran through the free-throw line at both ends. The Owls ranked 11th of 365 in free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) at 43.7%. They also sent opponents to the line at a 45.5% clip, 355th in the country. Few teams play a more physical game.

The catch is that the Owls didn't cash in. They made 69.3% of their free throws, 289th nationally. Austin Peay was steadier at 74.3%, so a game decided at the stripe would tilt toward the Governors unless Kennesaw State's best shooters are the ones drawing contact. That is where Simeon Cottle matters. He shot 86.8% from the line last season, and the more possessions he finishes, the less that team-wide weakness shows up.

Simpson guards the paint

Kennesaw State's defense was uneven, but the interior held up. Opponents made 45.8% of their two-pointers last season, 16th best in the country, and the Owls' block rate of 13.7% ranked 18th. Trey Simpson is a big reason. He led Conference USA in blocks as a true freshman and is back for his second year.

The Owls also crashed the glass, grabbing 36.1% of their own misses (32nd). Austin Peay struggled to protect its own rim last season, so second chances inside could be Kennesaw State's most reliable offense on a night when the jump shots don't fall.

Steals against a shaky handle

Austin Peay's defense lives on deflections. The Governors posted a steal rate of 13.1% last season, 14th in Division I, and turned that pressure into easy offense.

Kennesaw State was ordinary with the ball, giving it away on 16.9% of possessions (186th). With RJ Johnson, last season's top ball handler by assists, gone, the Owls' ball security is the most uncertain part of this matchup. Live-ball turnovers are the clearest path for Austin Peay to take an Owls crowd out of the game early.

Rebuilt Owls, steady coaching

Kennesaw State returns 60.5% of last season's minutes after a run that ended with its first Conference USA tournament title and a first-round NCAA Tournament game against Gonzaga. The departures hurt. RJ Johnson, who scored 14.4 points a game, left for Mississippi State, Braedan Lue went to Tennessee and rebounder Frankquon Sherman went to High Point.

Cottle is the swing piece. He averaged 20.2 points but played only 17 games, so a full season of him changes the Owls' ceiling. League coaches still picked Kennesaw State second in Conference USA, with three first-place votes.

Both programs have continuity on the bench: Corey Gipson and Antoine Pettway are each in their fourth season. Austin Peay's team numbers here are last season's, when it went 22-9, and how much of that roster returns isn't clear, so treat them as a loose guide.

Tempo and the total

No spread or total has been posted, and the tip time hasn't been confirmed. When numbers arrive, pace is the place to start. Austin Peay played fast last season at 70.7 possessions per 40 minutes, 48th in the country, while Kennesaw State sat closer to the middle. Add the foul rates and this projects as a long game with plenty of stoppages.

The last meeting, in February 2024, went to Austin Peay 85-69 at home.
