Washington Wizards vs Oklahoma City Thunder prediction: Washington's paint scorers face a Thunder defense missing Holmgren, not its bite
Washington scores inside or not at all, and short-handed Oklahoma City still allows fewer paint points than anyone in the league.
| Spread | Oklahoma City Thunder -11.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 223.5 |
- Expect a grinding half-court game, with Washington's interior scoring tested by the league's best paint defense on tired legs.
- Washington's paint attack, 3rd in the league, against a Thunder defense that allows the fewest paint points of any team.
- Thunder -11.5 and a 219.5 total haven't moved since our feed first saw them. Washington has gone under in 7 of 9 games.
Inside or nowhere
Oklahoma City has spent the season's first two weeks losing bodies and winning anyway. Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace are all out long term, yet the Thunder are 7-2 and still protect the basket better than anyone. Washington, 4-5 and playing the second night of a back-to-back, scores most of its points exactly where Oklahoma City is strongest.
The Wizards are a paint team by necessity. They rank 28th of 30 in 3-point attempt rate, and they make just 32.4% of the threes they do take. Where they do damage is at the rim: they score 52.2 points in the paint per game, 3rd in the league.
That attack runs into the league's stingiest interior. Oklahoma City allows 36.9 paint points per game, 1st of 30, and opponents shoot 49.2% on twos against it, 3rd. Losing Holmgren hasn't changed that, partly because Aday Mara blocks 1.8 shots a night off the bench. The cost is that opponents fire away from deep against the Thunder, who allow the 3rd-highest share of 3-point attempts. Washington isn't built to punish that.
The swing piece is Anthony Davis, who averages 23.4 points. He sat out Friday's game in Atlanta with a right ankle sprain and was listed day-to-day on Saturday's injury reports. No newer word had surfaced, so his status for tonight is unsettled. Deandre Ayton started in his spot Friday and would pair with Alex Sarr up front again if Davis can't go.
Mitchell carries a bigger load
With Jalen Williams sidelined, the Thunder offense leans harder on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is averaging 29.9 points. Ajay Mitchell has grabbed the rest of the room. He poured in a career-high 35 in Friday's rout of Memphis. Oklahoma City ranks 30th in assist rate (the share of made baskets that come off a pass), so this is an offense of shot creators rather than ball movement. That approach works when two guards are this hot.
The bench behind them is thin. Nikola Topic, Thomas Sorber and Jaylin Williams were listed differently across Saturday's reports, and none had been confirmed available for tonight.
Washington's backcourt has a mixed profile. Trae Young, now with the Wizards after a trade from Atlanta, dishes 9.6 assists a game but is shooting 29.0% from three. Kyshawn George has been the more reliable shooter at 39.2% from deep, and he scored 18 fourth-quarter points Friday to nearly drag Washington back against the Hawks.
Tired legs, low totals
Both teams played Friday. Oklahoma City flew home from Memphis after a 128-97 blowout. Washington gave up 139 in Atlanta in a game that stayed tight to the finish, and its rotation is already short with Reece Beekman, Tristan Vukcevic, Justin Champagnie and Jamir Watkins all out.
The market has the Thunder favored by 11.5 with a total of 219.5, and neither number has budged since our feed first recorded the game Saturday morning. The under trend is strong on both sides. Washington's games have gone under in 7 of 9, and Oklahoma City's in 6 of 9. Two slow-paced teams on short rest, one of which defends the paint this well, give that trend a sound reason behind it.
There's an edge to this one as well. Last March's meeting in Washington ended in a brawl that spilled into the stands and drew four ejections.
