Orlando Magic vs Golden State Warriors prediction: Stephen Curry and the NBA's best shooting team face a short-handed Magic
Golden State brings a six-game win streak and the league's most accurate 3-point attack against an Orlando team missing Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs and its spacing.
| Spread | Golden State Warriors -7.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 219.5 |
- Golden State's shooting and ball pressure should build a lead; Orlando's best path is pounding the paint against a soft interior defense.
- Watch Orlando's ball security against Golden State's hands: the Magic rank 28th in turnover rate, and the Warriors are 5th in forcing them.
- Golden State is a 6.5-point favorite, unchanged since our feed first saw the game; the Warriors are 7-2 against the spread.
Curry is shooting the lights out
Golden State opened 0-3, then won six straight, which ties it for the league's longest active streak. The engine is familiar. Stephen Curry is averaging 29.9 points and hitting 44.0% of his threes, and on Thursday against Miami he passed Oscar Robertson for 17th on the all-time scoring list.
The team around him is shooting with him. The Warriors make 38.9% of their threes, 1st in the league, and they take them at a high volume. Orlando's defense allows opponents 36.7% from deep, 23rd. That gap is where this game is most likely to be won. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg has been the second option, averaging 21.0 points, and De'Anthony Melton has hit 42.2% of his threes off the bench.
Orlando is running short on bodies
The Magic are 2-6 and have lost three straight, and the injury list explains much of it. Paolo Banchero is out with a right high-ankle sprain that the team said on Oct. 24 would cost him four to six weeks. Jalen Suggs (right knee bone bruise), Jonathan Isaac, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson are all listed out as well.
That leaves Franz Wagner carrying the creation load. He is averaging 8.5 assists, but he has made 7 of 36 from three, a 19.4% mark that lets defenses sag. Orlando's offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions) is 104.6, 26th in the league. The one bright shooting spot is reserve Tristan da Silva, who is hitting 42.2% from deep.
The turnover battle tilts hard
Orlando gives the ball away on 18.1% of its possessions, 28th in the league. Golden State forces turnovers on 17.6% of opponent possessions, 5th. Without Suggs and Banchero handling the ball, the Magic have few ways to shrink that number against a defense that jumps passing lanes.
The glass offers the Warriors more extra possessions. They grab 31.5% of their own misses, 6th, while Orlando ranks 19th in defensive rebounding. Golden State is careless itself, 24th in turnover rate, so the Magic will get some free chances back. They just haven't done much with them.
Where Orlando can push back
The Warriors' weakness is the paint. Opponents shoot 57.1% on twos against them, 26th in the league, and Kristaps Porzingis has stepped away from basketball to focus on his health. Orlando makes 55.6% of its twos, 9th, and Wendell Carter Jr. is shooting 65.6% from the field with 9.4 rebounds a game.
Draymond Green's status matters here. He was listed questionable on Nov. 6 with right elbow inflammation, a new injury, and Golden State hasn't said whether he plays. Green has been playing more center, and he set a season high with 11 assists against Miami. Gary Payton II (right calf) and Gui Santos (knee) are also questionable; Santos practiced Friday. If Green sits, Georges Niang may start and Charles Bassey would likely pick up minutes inside.
What the market sees
Golden State is favored by 6.5 with a total of 221.5, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded it, across 11 books. The Warriors have covered seven of nine and all five of their recent games. Orlando is 2-6 against the spread, and five of its eight games have gone under.
The teams split last season's meetings. Orlando won 121-113 at home, and Golden State answered with a 120-97 win at Chase Center.
