Houston Rockets vs Phoenix Suns prediction: Rockets' shooters and second chances test Phoenix's last-ranked defensive glass
Houston brings a top-three offense and an eight-game win streak in the series to a Suns defense that has not stopped anyone, and Phoenix's best counter is turnovers.
| Spread | Houston Rockets -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 224 |
- Houston's efficient offense should find open threes and second shots against Phoenix's 28th-ranked defense; the Suns need turnovers to keep pace.
- The glass: Houston's 5th-ranked offensive rebounding against Phoenix's 30th-ranked defensive rebounding, with Capela and Adams both out for Houston.
- Rockets -7.5 and a 221.5 total haven't moved since our feed first saw them; Houston is 7-2 against the spread, Phoenix 1-6.
A defense that gives everything back
Phoenix's season has a simple problem: it can't get stops. The Suns allow 119.0 points per 100 possessions, 28th of 30, and opponents shoot 39.4% from three against them, also 28th. That is a rough setup against Houston, which scores 117.5 points per 100 possessions, 3rd in the league.
The Rockets don't fire away from deep. They rank 23rd in 3-point attempt rate. They just make what they take: 38.6% from three, 2nd in the NBA, and an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 56.6%, 3rd. Jabari Smith Jr. is the sharpest edge of it, hitting 27 of his 55 threes this season.
The bigger lever may be the misses. Houston grabs 31.8% of its own missed shots, 5th in the league. Phoenix's defensive rebounding rate of 65.1% ranks dead last. With Mark Williams out after shoulder surgery, Maluach is expected to carry more of the load inside, and every long rebound he and the Suns' forwards concede is another possession for a team that already scores efficiently.
Phoenix's way back is turnovers
If the Suns have an answer, it lives in the passing lanes. Phoenix forces turnovers at a 17.6% rate, 4th in the league. Houston gives the ball away at 15.8%, which ranks 19th.
That soft spot showed up in Wednesday's home loss to Minnesota. Houston committed 22 turnovers and allowed 35 fourth-quarter points in a 117-107 defeat. Durant afterward said the team "can't guard." The Rockets arrive saying they want to learn from those late collapses, and Phoenix will test that resolve with active hands.
The Suns also protect their own possessions, ranking 7th in turnover rate. A game where Phoenix wins the turnover battle by a wide margin is how it offsets the rebounding gap.
Short frontcourts, uneven legs
Both teams are thin up front. Clint Capela is out with a right ankle sprain, and Steven Adams remains out with a calf strain; Ime Udoka said Wednesday that Adams has no timetable and will be evaluated weekly. Tari Eason was expected to pick up extended minutes, including some at center. That leaves Alperen Sengun, at 22.4 points and 8.1 assists a game, as the hub of everything Houston does inside.
Phoenix lists Jordan Goodwin as doubtful with a calf injury and Rasheer Fleming as questionable with a left ankle sprain. Jordan Ott changed his starting lineup for Thursday's 117-104 win over Orlando, a result that snapped a four-game losing streak.
Schedule favors the visitors. Houston hasn't played since Wednesday. Phoenix is playing its third game in four nights. Devin Booker, who averaged 26.1 points last season, will need help from newcomer Miles Bridges, who averaged 17.1 points for Charlotte last season.
Eight straight and a line that won't move
Houston has won the last eight meetings, including all four last season. Two of those came in Phoenix, by scores of 114-92 and 119-105. Durant is chasing a 5-0 record against his former team, and his public back-and-forth with Suns owner Mat Ishbia last month, which also drew in Dillon Brooks, adds an edge. There's a quieter subplot too: Houston owns Phoenix's 2027 first-round pick.
The market has Houston favored by 7.5, with a 221.5 total, and neither number has budged since our feed first logged them across 11 books. The ATS records point the same way: Houston is 7-2 against the spread, Phoenix 1-6. One caution on the number itself: the Rockets failed to cover as 7.5-point home favorites against Minnesota.
On the total, Phoenix's games have gone over in five of seven. Houston's slow tempo, 28th in pace, is the main thing pulling the other direction.
What to watch
- Second chances: whether Houston's offensive rebounding piles up extra shots without Capela and Adams.
- Live-ball turnovers: Phoenix needs the Rockets to look like the team that gave it away 22 times Wednesday.
- Phoenix's legs: a third game in four nights against a rested opponent.
- Late status calls: Goodwin and Fleming are both listed as uncertain for tonight.
