San Antonio Spurs vs Portland Trail Blazers prediction: Wembanyama's twisted ankle hangs over Portland's three-point barrage in Spurs rematch
Portland takes more threes than almost anyone, the Spurs allow fewer than anyone, and both teams arrive on the second night of a back-to-back.
| Spread | San Antonio Spurs -5.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 229.5 |
- Spurs try to wall off the arc and own the paint; Portland needs a hot shooting night to beat a tired favorite.
- Wembanyama against Clingan and Camara, with his left ankle the first thing to check before tip.
- Spurs -5.5, total 227, both unmoved since Saturday morning; San Antonio is just 3-6 against the spread despite a 7-2 record.
The ankle that matters most
Victor Wembanyama has been the loudest story of the young season. He is averaging 29.1 points and 12.6 rebounds, and he posted career highs of 52 points and 24 rebounds, with eight blocks, in a one-point win over Dallas on Nov. 4. Two nights later in Sacramento he scored 20 of his 30 points in the first half of a 124-109 rout that stretched San Antonio's winning streak to seven.
He also twisted his left ankle in that game after landing on Domantas Sabonis' foot. He did not appear on either Saturday injury listing, and the Spurs have not said anything further. With this the second night of a back-to-back, his status is worth confirming before tip.
If he plays, Portland is attacking the stingiest interior in the league. Opponents shoot 46.9% on twos against San Antonio, best of 30. Portland's plan rotates Donovan Clingan, Toumani Camara, Matisse Thybulle and Jerami Grant on him. Clingan carries the heaviest load: 10.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks a night.
Threes against a closed arc
Portland's offense lives beyond the line. The Blazers take 50.8% of their shots from three, second most in the league. Their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes 1.5 times, sits at 57.3%, also 2nd.
San Antonio's defense takes that away better than anyone. Spurs opponents take just 36.5% of their shots from deep, the lowest share in the league. The catch is what happens when a shooter does get loose: opponents are hitting 38.1% of those threes, 26th of 30.
Portland has the shooters to punish that. Camara is making 47.5% from three on 59 attempts, and Jrue Holiday is hitting 43.5% off the bench. Damian Lillard has been streakier at 32.9%. If the Blazers win the volume fight, they can win the game.
Possessions and the foul line
San Antonio protects the ball better than any team in the league, turning it over on 12.5% of possessions. Portland coughs it up on 16.3%, 23rd. Neither defense generates many takeaways, so this edge depends on Portland's own care, not on Spurs pressure.
The Blazers also lean on free throws, ranking 2nd in attempts per shot. San Antonio rarely sends teams to the line, 3rd-best in that category, and Portland shoots just 73.7% when it gets there, 28th. Add a Spurs offense that ranks 2nd in paint points and 2nd in fast-break points, and the hidden possessions tilt toward the visitors.
A thinned Portland backcourt
Portland is 6-2 without much of its guard depth. Ja Morant is out with a Grade 2 hamstring strain the team expected to cost him about four weeks. Shaedon Sharpe is out after meniscus surgery, and Vit Krejci fractured his left leg in the Nov. 4 win at Phoenix.
Deni Avdija has absorbed the load at 23.2 points and 7.0 assists. He had 22 points and 11 assists Friday in Los Angeles, where Portland's big lead vanished during a 17-0 Lakers run in the third quarter. Luka Doncic scored 53 in that one.
Tobias Harris (calf) was listed day-to-day Saturday, though the league report shows an expected return of Nov. 9, so his status is unsettled. Jayden Quaintance remains out. Julian Champagnie has filled the gap, shooting 42.9% from three in a bench role.
Where the line sits
The Spurs are 5.5-point favorites with a total of 227, and neither number has moved since Saturday morning. San Antonio's record against the spread is the counterweight to its winning streak: 3-6 overall, with one cover in its last five as a double-digit favorite. Six of its nine games have stayed under the total. Portland is 5-3 against the spread.
The history adds edge. The Spurs led last spring's first-round series 3-1 after a 114-93 Game 4 win in this building, and the teams share an NBA Cup group this season.
