Quick take
  • Expect Toronto to squeeze possessions with steals and run, while Minnesota leans on threes and the glass to offset an interior that has bent.
  • Toronto's paint attack against a Wolves defense allowing opponents 64.5% on twos, 30th of 30, with Rudy Gobert anchoring the middle.
  • Minnesota is a 1-point favorite with the total at 232, both unmoved since our first line; all four games between these teams' starts went under.

Toronto's turnover machine

Two unbeaten teams, two new stars, and one question: can Minnesota's rebuilt backcourt protect the ball against the most disruptive defense in the league so far? Toronto has held opponents to 87.3 points per 100 possessions, best in the NBA, and much of that comes from taking the ball away before a shot goes up.

The Raptors force turnovers on 22.5% of opponent possessions, 1st of 30, and turn those steals into a league-leading 25.5 fast-break points per game. Minnesota has been tidy, with a turnover rate of 13.4 per 100 possessions, 7th in the league. But the Wolves are running their offense through a lead guard playing his third game with the team, and they generate little in transition themselves, ranking 26th in fast-break scoring. If Toronto wins the live-ball battle, it gets easy points that its half-court offense can't produce.

Where the shots come from

Toronto's offense is a paint operation by necessity. The Raptors take threes on just 32.7% of their shots, the lowest rate in the league, and they've made only 26.2% of them. They make up for it inside, scoring 55.0 points in the paint per game.

That plays directly into Minnesota's soft spot. Wolves opponents are shooting 64.5% on two-pointers, worst in the NBA, and Minnesota blocks just 6.5% of opponent twos, 27th. Gobert is still the anchor, but the help around him hasn't arrived.

The other end flips the script. Minnesota has made 40.2% of its threes, 5th in the league, against a Toronto defense holding opponents to 21.9% from deep. Something will regress here, and whichever streak breaks first may decide the game.

The glass and the line

Minnesota has owned the boards, grabbing 37.5% of its own misses and 86.0% of opponents' misses, both 1st in the league. Second chances are how the Wolves can claw back possessions Toronto steals.

Toronto's defense comes with a cost: opponents have attempted free throws at a rate of 50.0% of their field-goal attempts, the highest in the league. Normally that's a gift. Minnesota, though, is hitting just 59.3% at the line, 30th, and Gobert shot 52.6% on free throws last season. Toronto can afford to be physical inside if the Wolves keep leaving points at the stripe.

Who's missing, who's new

Donte DiVincenzo remains out after Achilles surgery, with an estimated return in April. Terrence Shannon Jr. is positioned to absorb his minutes, and second-year big Joan Beringer continues to back up Gobert. The offense now belongs to Anthony Edwards, who averaged 28.8 points last season, and LaMelo Ball, who averaged 7.1 assists for Charlotte.

Toronto rebuilt around Kawhi Leonard, who scored 27.9 points per game for the Clippers last season, alongside Scottie Barnes. Brandon Ingram is gone to the Clippers. Big man Nate Bittle is out with a right foot fracture and is listed out again Sunday. Both teams return about two thirds of last season's minutes, so last season's team numbers are a loose guide.

What the market sees

Minnesota is favored by 1 at home with the total at 232, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game Sunday morning. Both teams are 2-0 against the spread, and all four of their games have gone under. Toronto's tendency isn't new: the Raptors went under in 41 of 65 games last season.

Minnesota won both meetings last season, 128-126 in Toronto and 115-107 at Target Center, though both rosters look different now. Tip is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Key players

  • Kawhi Leonard (Toronto Raptors): Averaged 27.9 points and shot 38.7% from three for the Clippers last season, giving a three-shy offense its best shooter.
  • Scottie Barnes (Toronto Raptors): Averaged 18.1 points, 5.9 assists and 1.4 steals for Toronto last season, the engine of its turnover-driven defense.
  • Immanuel Quickley (Toronto Raptors): Made 37.4% of his threes for Toronto last season, a key outside threat on the league's lowest-volume 3-point team.
  • Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves): Averaged 28.8 points on 39.9% from three for Minnesota last season.
  • LaMelo Ball (Minnesota Timberwolves): Averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists for Charlotte last season, and now handles the ball against the league's top turnover-forcing defense.
  • Rudy Gobert (Minnesota Timberwolves): Grabbed 11.5 rebounds per game for Minnesota last season but shot 52.6% at the free-throw line.
