Quick take
  • The Lakers should win the paint and the shot-quality battle, while Utah's path runs through free throws and Lakers turnovers.
  • Lakers drives against Utah's shot-blockers. Los Angeles makes 67.0% of its twos, and the Jazz block 14.2% of opponent twos.
  • The Lakers are 6.5-point favorites with a 237.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw the game. The Jazz are 0-2 against the spread.

Kessler comes home to a paint fight

Walker Kessler walks back into Delta Center on Sunday as a Laker. Utah traded its old center to a team that has opened 2-0. The homecoming is the storyline, but the real contest happens where he works.

The Lakers have scored 62 points in the paint per game, the most in the league. The Jazz have allowed 61 per game there, the worst mark in the NBA. Los Angeles is also making 67.0% of its two-point shots, first in the league.

Utah's one counter is shot-blocking. Its block rate (blocks per opponent two-point attempt) of 14.2% is among the league's best. That protection now has to come without Jusuf Nurkic, who has a partial plantar plate tear in his right foot and was ruled out for at least four weeks on Oct. 7. Sunday's injury report still lists him out, which leaves more of the rim work to Jaren Jackson Jr. and Kyle Filipowski.

A rebuilt Lakers roster that already hums

Only 39.9% of last season's Lakers minutes are back. LeBron James is in Philadelphia, Deandre Ayton is in Washington and Rui Hachimura is with the Clippers. What remains is a backcourt that can carry a game: Luka Doncic averaged 33.5 points last season and Austin Reaves added 23.3.

The newcomers bring shooting. Collin Sexton hit 40.1% from three for Charlotte last season and was set to make his Lakers debut Friday after a calf strain. Jake LaRavia missed the Clippers game with a right ankle sprain but is off the injury report. Adou Thiero (knee) and Cameron Carr (oblique) are out.

The early returns are striking. The Lakers' effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) sits at 65.3%, first in the league. Their net efficiency is 14.4 points per 100 possessions, 5th in the league.

Utah's new core lives at the line

The Jazz look different at the top. No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson joined Keyonte George, Ace Bailey, Lauri Markkanen and Jackson in the starting five against New Orleans, though the lineup is still in flux. George averaged 23.6 points last season.

Utah's best weapon so far is the whistle. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) is 41.2%, the highest in the league. The Jazz haven't cashed in, shooting 71.2% at the line, 25th in the league. Peterson's two go-ahead free throws in the final minute beat the Pelicans 120-119, and that game came after Utah let a big lead slip in the third quarter.

Turnovers cut both ways

The Lakers' flaw is ball security. They have turned it over on 18.7% of possessions, which ranks 25th. Utah isn't built to punish that. Its steal rate of 6.2% is among the league's lowest, and it barely runs in transition.

The pressure flows the other way. Los Angeles forces turnovers on 20.1% of opponent possessions, and the Jazz have given it away on 17.3% of theirs. If Utah's young guards get loose with the ball, the Lakers' edge grows.

Where the market sits

The Lakers are 6.5-point favorites with the total at 237.5. Neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game, and 11 books are quoting it.

Utah has failed to cover in both of its games. The Lakers are 1-1 against the spread: they covered in their rout of Golden State but not in the win over the Clippers. Los Angeles also won all four meetings last season, though both rosters have changed a great deal since then.
