Winnipeg Jets vs Carolina Hurricanes prediction: Unbeaten Kochetkov stands between Winnipeg and the end of an eight-game skid

The defending champions own the puck and an unbeaten goalie, while the Jets arrive in Raleigh short on scoring, healthy defensemen and a settled starter.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 1, 12:05 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Carolina's shot volume should tilt the ice against a Jets team that ranks 30th in scoring and has lost eight straight.
  • Pyotr Kochetkov, 9-0-0 to open the season, against a Winnipeg crease that hasn't been settled since the Hellebuyck trade.
  • Carolina is -270 on the moneyline, and the total has dropped from 6.5 to 6.0; both teams have gone under nine times.

A champion and a team in free fall

The defending Stanley Cup champions sit at 11-2-2 and haven't lost a game Pyotr Kochetkov has started. Winnipeg comes in on the other end of the standings, losers of eight straight (0-6-2) after Friday's 5-2 defeat in Florida. The Jets didn't practice Saturday.

Kochetkov is expected to start again. His 9-0-0 run set a Carolina record for the longest season-opening winning streak, and he has paired it with a .918 save percentage and a 1.66 goals-against average.

Winnipeg's crease is less clear. Stuart Skinner is listed as the probable starter, but the Jets haven't named anyone, and Nico Daws took Friday's start, making 33 saves in his Winnipeg debut. Daws arrived from New Jersey in the trade that sent Connor Hellebuyck to the Devils. Skinner has an .899 save percentage this season, a number that leaves little margin against the league's busiest shooting team.

Carolina lives in the offensive zone

Shot share measures a team's portion of all the shots taken in its games, and Carolina leads the league at 60.0%. The Hurricanes also rank first in shots on goal per game and second in fewest shots allowed.

Winnipeg ranks 26th in shot share. That is a problem for a club that already struggles to finish: the Jets score 2.43 goals per game, 30th of 32, and rank last in first-period scoring. Falling behind early against a team that controls possession has been their pattern, not an exception.

The last meeting was closer than the profiles suggest. Carolina won 3-2 in Winnipeg on Oct. 17, and it has taken all three meetings across the last two seasons.

Who's carrying each attack

Kyle Connor has been almost the whole Winnipeg offense, with 11 goals on 57 shots. That finishing rate is hard to sustain, and the support behind him has thinned. Mark Scheifele has set up plenty but has only two goals.

The blue line is also short. Josh Morrissey is on injured reserve with an expected return of Nov. 3, and forwards Vladislav Namestnikov and Nick Bjugstad and Garrett Brown are also on IR.

Carolina spreads it around. Sebastian Aho leads the team with 19 points, and Logan Stankoven has scored nine goals. The Hurricanes are without Taylor Hall, who coach Rod Brind'Amour said would miss "probably another couple games," and Jordan Staal remains on injured reserve. Mark Jankowski, who scored in Thursday's win over Columbus, is in the projected lineup, and Carolina is expected to dress the same group from that game.

Penalties and the price

Power play % is goals scored per power-play opportunity, and penalty kill % is the share of opponents' chances a team survives. Winnipeg's kill sits 23rd at 71.8%, while Carolina draws 3.53 power plays per game, fifth in the league.

The Jets' best defense is discipline. They rank seventh in fewest times shorthanded, so a clean game limits Carolina's best route to a lopsided score.

The market prices Carolina at -270, with the Jets at +220 and the Hurricanes laying 1.5 goals on the puck line. The total has slid from 6.5 to 6.0 since our feed first saw the game. Both clubs lean low: each has gone under nine times this season. Carolina's own puck line record sits at 7-8, a reminder that its wins often come by one goal.
