Minnesota Wild vs Washington Capitals prediction: Capitals' fast starts test Wallstedt and Minnesota's stingy Wild defense

Washington owns the league's best first periods, but Minnesota allows fewer goals than almost anyone and arrives with Jesper Wallstedt in net.

Quick take
  • Expect Washington to push early at home, then a grind as Minnesota's shot volume and Wallstedt's form take over.
  • Wallstedt (.916) against Logan Thompson (.903) is the matchup, with Thompson the probable starter after a lower-body injury.
  • Moneylines sit near even and the total dropped from 6.5 to 6.0; Minnesota has gone under in 10 of 15 games.

Fast starts against a wall

Washington scores early better than anyone. The Capitals average 1.33 first-period goals per game, 1st of 32, and they have won every game since a home loss to Los Angeles on Oct. 20, capped by Alex Tuch's third-period winner in Nashville.

The catch is what follows the fast starts. Washington also allows 1.17 first-period goals per game, 29th in the league, and sits 16th in goals allowed overall. Minnesota brings the opposite profile: 2.33 goals allowed per game, 2nd in the NHL, built on limiting chances and strong goaltending. If the Capitals don't cash in early, this game tilts toward the Wild's preferred pace.

Wallstedt carries the crease

With Filip Gustavsson on injured reserve until at least mid-November, Jesper Wallstedt has been Minnesota's season. He has a .916 save percentage and a 2.14 goals-against average across 13 starts, and he has been confirmed for the road net. He last played Thursday, when Matthew Schaefer beat him 33 seconds into overtime.

Washington hasn't confirmed a starter. Logan Thompson is the probable starter after being activated from injured reserve with a lower-body injury; he owns a .903 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against average in eight games. Charlie Lindgren, at 88.7% in four games, is the alternative. The gap between these goalies is the clearest edge in the matchup.

Volume versus finishing

Minnesota controls the puck. The Wild take 55.1% of all shots in their games, 4th in the league, and fire 30.8 shots per game. Washington sits near the middle with a 49.9% shot share and allows 28.0 shots per game, 20th.

The Capitals counter by finishing and blocking. They score on 12.9% of their shots (8th), while Minnesota converts just 10.2% (24th). Washington also blocks 17.1 shots per game, the most in the league, a style that can blunt the Wild's volume.

Special teams favor Minnesota. The Wild's power play converts 25.0% of its chances (8th) and draws 3.47 power plays per game (5th). Washington's penalty kill ranks 16th at 79.5%, and its own power play sits 21st at 18.2%.

Stars and a thin Wild blue line

Kirill Kaprizov has 14 goals and 24 points in 15 games, and Quinn Hughes logs 27.6 minutes a night with 20 points. Joel Eriksson Ek is expected to play after taking a puck to the knee against the Islanders; coach John Hynes said he had a "full practice today, so he should be good to go."

Minnesota's defense is depleted. Jared Spurgeon, Brock Faber, and both Folignos remain on injured reserve, leaving pairs of Hughes and Jonas Brodin, Olli Maatta and Zach Bogosian, and Matt Kiersted and David Spacek at Saturday's practice.

For Washington, Tuch has 10 goals on a 30.3% shooting rate, a pace unlikely to hold. Dylan Strome adds 12 points, and rookie defenseman Cole Hutson is coming off a two-goal game. Rasmus Sandin practiced fully on Oct. 31 but has no return timeline, and Vincent Desharnais is out after an appendectomy.

What the market says

Books have this nearly even: Minnesota -109, Washington -110. The puck line has moved toward the Wild, with Washington now +1.5 after sitting at -1.5 when our feed first saw the game. The total fell from 6.5 to 6.0.

The teams' histories pull opposite ways on that total. Washington has gone over in 8 of 12 games, Minnesota under in 10 of 15. Last season the teams split two lopsided meetings, with each side winning at home: Washington 5-1 and Minnesota 5-0.
