Ottawa Senators vs Anaheim Ducks prediction: Ottawa's back-to-back goalie question collides with Anaheim's crease problem

Neither side has a settled crease tonight, which leaves a Ducks team that can score and a Senators team riding Stützle and Batherson trading chances.

Quick take
  • Expect goaltending to swing this one: Anaheim turns to recalled Laurent Brossoit, while Ottawa, on a back-to-back, has not named its starter.
  • The matchup to watch is Anaheim's 28.6% power play against a Senators team ranked 30th in penalty minutes per game.
  • Ottawa is a modest -118 moneyline favorite with the total at 6.5; Senators games have gone under 9 times in 15.

Two creases, no sure thing

Anaheim's season has been undone by its crease. The Ducks' team save percentage sits at 86.2%, 31st of 32, and regular starter Lukas Dostal is at .872. So the Ducks are changing the voice in net. Laurent Brossoit was recalled from San Diego on Saturday and is expected to start, a fresh face for a team that keeps losing games it should close.

Ottawa's answer is murkier. Samuel Ersson started Saturday's 5-1 win in San Jose, his first victory as a Senator, and Sunday is the second half of a back-to-back, the usual night for a backup. Jonas Johansson is the listed backup, but the Senators haven't confirmed anyone. Ersson's season line is shaky at .866. The goalie who carried Ottawa early, Linus Ullmark (.945), remains on injured reserve with a lower-body strain; the last update, from Oct. 22, had him missing one to two weeks.

Penalties tilt toward Anaheim

Ottawa lives on the power play without cashing in. The Senators draw 4.13 power plays per game, 2nd in the league. They convert just 12.9% of them (power-play goals per opportunity), 29th.

The Ducks are the opposite. Their power play converts at 28.6%, 6th in the NHL, and Ottawa sits near the bottom of the league in penalty minutes. Anaheim visits the box plenty too, and its own overtime loss to Vancouver on Oct. 27 ended on a 5-on-3 goal. In a game with two uncertain goalies, whichever side stays disciplined gets the cleaner path to the scoreboard.

Stützle and Batherson against a fragile lead

Tim Stützle has 21 points and is driving everything for Ottawa, including a 4-on-4 goal Saturday that broke open the San Jose game. Drake Batherson carries a seven-game point streak on the second line. The depth is thinner: Andre Burakovsky and Warren Foegele are out three to four weeks, William Eklund is on injured reserve, and Hayden Hodgson is serving a two-game suspension. Philip Tomasino and Xavier Bourgault were recalled to fill in. Jake Sanderson is back on the top pair and had two assists Saturday.

Anaheim can score. Leo Carlsson has 18 points, mostly as a setup man, and Beckett Sennecke is the finisher on the second line. The issue is holding on. The Ducks blew a 5-2 lead against Vancouver, then lost a shootout-free slugfest to Buffalo, and they are 1-4-1 at Honda Center. Troy Terry is getting close but was not described as imminent as of Saturday, and Pavel Mintyukov, Ryan Poehling and Ian Moore remain on injured reserve.

What the market is pricing

Ottawa is a short road favorite at -118, with Anaheim at even money despite the Senators' tired legs. The puck line has moved toward Ottawa since Saturday, with the Senators now laying the 1.5 goals.

The total sits at 6.5 and has not budged. That number cuts two ways. Ottawa's games have gone under in 9 of 15, but Anaheim's last three all went over, and both teams are leaning on goalies who arrive with question marks. Ottawa also won both meetings last season, including a shutout in Ottawa.
