Washington Capitals vs Nashville Predators prediction: Lindgren's second-night start tests the Capitals against Nashville's elite special teams

Washington brings the league's best first-period offense into Nashville on a back-to-back, likely with its backup in goal against a top-five power play and penalty kill.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 29, 6:05 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Washington's fast starts meet a rested Nashville team. If the Capitals don't build an early lead, the Predators' special teams should tilt the game.
  • Charlie Lindgren, the probable starter on the back-to-back, against Nashville's power play, which converts 31.7% and ranks 3rd of 32.
  • Nashville is now a narrow moneyline favorite at -108, and Washington sits at -110. The puck line has Nashville at -1.5 and Washington at +1.5, and the line has moved from Nashville +1.5 to Nashville -1.5 since our feed first saw the game.

Lindgren on the second night

Washington beat Philadelphia 5-2 at home on Wednesday, with Logan Thompson back in goal after missing time with a lower-body injury. Now the Capitals play in Nashville the next night. Charlie Lindgren is listed as the probable starter. That fits the schedule, but the Capitals haven't confirmed it.

That matters because Lindgren has had a rough start. He has an 88.6% save percentage and a 2.98 goals-against average over three games. Three starts is a tiny sample, but every goalie on the second half of a back-to-back gets tested. Washington also has a lopsided split: 6-2-0 at home and 1-2-0 on the road.

Juuse Saros is the probable starter for Nashville, which last played Tuesday. He has a 90.6% save percentage and a 2.81 goals-against average in nine games. He made 34 saves in Saturday's overtime loss at Pittsburgh.

Nashville's special teams edge

The Predators have been ordinary at even strength and excellent on special teams. Their power play (power-play goals per opportunity) converts 31.7%, 3rd in the league. Their penalty kill stops 87.5% of chances, 4th.

Washington is middle of the pack on both. Its power play runs at 19.4%, 20th, and its kill sits 15th. The Predators also draw 3.42 power plays per game, 8th, while taking few penalties: their 7.7 penalty minutes per game rank 4th lowest. If the referees call this one tightly, the extra chances should go Nashville's way.

Capitals strike early, and so do opponents

Washington plays wide-open first periods. The Capitals score 1.36 first-period goals per game, the most in the league. They also allow 1.18, which ranks 30th. Seven of their 11 games have gone over the total.

The scoring runs through two forwards. Alex Tuch has 9 goals on a 28.1% shooting rate, a pace that rarely lasts. Dylan Strome leads the team with 12 points. Tuch and Jordan Kyrou each scored twice against the Flyers.

Nashville's problem is volume. Its shot share (its share of all shots in its games) is 46.7%, 27th. Steven Stamkos still leads the Predators with 15 points, and Roman Josi has 11 assists from the blue line. Washington blocks 17.8 shots per game, the most in the NHL, which cuts into the chances a low-volume team does get.

Who's missing

Washington's blue line is thin. Rasmus Sandin is on long-term injured reserve after knee surgery, and Vincent Desharnais is out after an appendectomy. The club claimed Jack St. Ivany off waivers, and he was expected to debut Wednesday. Noel Acciari was hurt against Philadelphia and skated off under his own power. His status for Thursday is unknown.

For Nashville, defenseman William Trudeau went on injured reserve in early October with an upper-body injury. There has been no update since. The Predators are 4-3-5, and they are coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Islanders. After a 6-0 loss in Boston earlier in the stretch, Predators coach Andrew Brunette said, "It was our worst effort of the year — by far."

What the market says

The books have this game close to even. Nashville is the listed favorite at -108 and Washington sits at -110. The puck line has Nashville at -1.5 and Washington at +1.5, and the line has moved from Nashville +1.5 to Nashville -1.5 since our feed first saw the game. The total is 6.5.

The two teams split last season's meetings, and the home team won both times. Nashville is 7-5 against the puck line this season, while Washington is 5-6.
