UMass Minutemen vs UConn Huskies prediction: Pop Watson's ankle decides whether UMass can hang with UConn
UConn's big-play offense should control this game at home, and a 16.5-point spread may depend on whether UMass gets its starting quarterback back in time.
| Spread | UConn -13 |
|---|
- UConn's explosive run game should build a lead. UMass's best path to a cover is turnovers and short fields, not trading points.
- Cyncir Bowers and UConn's rushing attack against a UMass defense that has slipped badly over its last three games.
- Our model makes UConn a 16.39-point favorite with a 47.95 total, virtually identical to the market.
Everything Hinges on Watson
UMass is 4-3 and enjoying its best season in a generation. It arrives in East Hartford on a three-game losing streak, though, and the last two losses came in the final minute. Whether the Minutemen can stay inside a 16.5-point number Friday night may come down to one ankle.
Pop Watson III is a game-time decision. Harasymiak said Watson will be evaluated until Friday afternoon and pregame warmups. Watson missed the Miami (OH) and Buffalo games. In his five appearances he completed 74.0% of his passes at 8.2 yards per attempt and added 4 rushing touchdowns.
The drop-off without him is easy to see. Over the last three games, a stretch that includes both of his absences, UMass averaged 17.0 points. Its EPA (expected points added per play) over that span was -0.009, which means the offense lost ground on a typical snap. Backup Aedan McCarthy is doubtful. Harasymiak described him as "a little bit probably farther behind those four guys," referring to the injured regulars who practiced Monday. That points to Logan Inagawa, who started at Buffalo and who, Harasymiak said, plays the most like Watson. Receivers T.Y. Harding and Joseph Griffin Jr. and defender William DePaepe are also game-time decisions.
Big Plays Against a Wall
UConn's offense lives on chunk gains. The Huskies rank 8th nationally in explosiveness, which measures how much a successful play gains on average. They rank 28th in scoring. Kalieb Osborne averages 8.7 yards per attempt, and Cyncir Bowers runs for 6.7 yards per carry. Bowers ripped Syracuse for 163 yards.
The season numbers say UMass is built to stop exactly that. The Minutemen rank 11th in explosiveness allowed and 16th in yards per play allowed. Two things undercut that profile. First, the schedule: UMass's FBS opponents average an SP+ of -12.3, softer than UConn's -6.7. Second, recent form. Over the last three games UMass allowed 0.141 EPA per play, far worse than its season mark, which ranks 28th. It gave up 27.7 points a game in that stretch against Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH) and Buffalo, none of them better than 99th in SP+.
Our projection has UConn rushing for 214 yards. If the Minutemen's recent defensive form holds, Bowers and Osborne should find room.
Where UMass Can Stay Close
UConn's defense has a clear weakness. It allows 290.5 passing yards per game, 135th of 138, and ranks 114th on third-down defense. UMass is poorly built to exploit it. The Minutemen pass for 179.0 yards per game, 117th, and our projection labels them run-first and slow. Jabari Lewis is the receiver to watch, with 224 yards over his last three games.
The better hope is hidden yardage. UMass ranks 13th in takeaways per game, and Jahmad Harmon has 3 interceptions. UConn is 123rd in sacks allowed per game and 130th in penalty yards, so drives stall on their own. The Minutemen also rank 2nd in punt return average. A turnover or a big return could set up a short field and keep this inside the number.
Rest, the Line and Our Number
UConn has 13 days of rest. UMass has 6 days after an overtime loss at Buffalo. The line opened at UConn -16.5 and hasn't moved, with the total at 47.5.
Our model agrees with the market. It makes UConn a 16.39-point favorite with an 85% chance to win and puts the total at 47.95. For the first half, it sets UConn at -8.21 with a total of 24.85. If UConn does cover, the run game is the likely reason. In our testing, a favorite's cover and its rushing total going over tend to happen together.

Numbers that matter
| UConn explosiveness rank | 8th | The Huskies' big-play offense is the main reason they are favored by more than two touchdowns. |
|---|---|---|
| UMass last-3 scoring | 17.0 | UMass's points per game over a stretch that included both of Watson's absences. |
| UMass last-3 EPA allowed | 0.141 | A sharp decline from a season-long defense that ranks 28th in EPA allowed. |
| UConn pass yards allowed rank | 135th | UConn's biggest weakness, though UMass ranks 117th in passing offense. |
| Our fair spread | -16.39 | Essentially the same as the market's UConn -16.5. |
