Air Force Falcons vs Wyoming Cowboys prediction: Evan Medders and Air Force's Option Aim at Wyoming's Soft Middle
A new quarterback runs the nation's second-best ground game into a Wyoming front that can't win at the line of scrimmage, and Sawvel knows it.
| Spread | Air Force -6 |
|---|
- Air Force grinds long drives on the ground, Wyoming answers with Tyler Hughes's legs, and the total stays low in a slow game.
- Air Force's line, second in line yards per carry, against a Wyoming front ranked 133rd in line yards allowed.
- Our model makes Air Force about a 6.9-point favorite with a 44.5 total, almost exactly the market.
The run defense Air Force wants
Air Force runs for 343.0 yards per game, second in FBS. Its line yards per carry, a measure of the push the offensive line creates before a back reaches the second level, sits at 3.74, also second.
Wyoming is close to the worst possible opponent for that offense. The Cowboys rank 133rd in line yards allowed and 127th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line. Their rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play) ranks 123rd.
Sawvel knows what that means. "In the last nine times that we've played Air Force, if they have four drives of eight or more plays, we've only won one game," he said this week. The Falcons rarely hit big plays: they rank 136th in explosiveness, the average value of their successful plays, and Wyoming ranks 14th in explosiveness allowed. So Air Force won't win this with big plays. It will win it with long, patient drives, the exact script Sawvel fears.
Medders moves under center
Liam Szarka is out for the season after getting hurt in the win over Navy, and Evan Medders has taken over the offense. The switch hasn't slowed anything. Medders ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns in the 41-31 win over UNLV, and over the last three games he has 296 rushing yards at 7.6 per carry.
Owen Allen gives the Falcons a second runner, with 100 yards against Northern Illinois and 96 against UNLV. The passing game barely exists: Air Force throws for 64.0 yards per game, last in FBS.
That makes Wyoming's pass rush mostly irrelevant. Air Force allows havoc (tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, interceptions and pass breakups) on just 5.7% of plays, the best rate in the country. Esaia Bogar has 3.5 sacks for Wyoming, but an option offense that rarely drops back gives him few chances to add to it.
Hughes carries the Cowboys
Wyoming scores 18.3 points per game, 127th in FBS, and ranks 133rd in passing yards. The Cowboys move the ball by running it, and their line ranks 7th in line yards per carry. That gives them a real opening, because Air Force ranks 102nd in line yards allowed and 135th in tackles for loss per game.
Hughes is the engine. He ran for 183 yards and four touchdowns against Northern Illinois while completing 16 of 19 passes, and Sawvel called his early exit from that game precautionary. The caution: Northern Illinois ranks 134th in SP+, and at North Dakota State Hughes went 5 of 14 for 52 yards in a 28-0 loss.
Samuel Harris is expected to play after clearing concussion protocol. Wyoming will be without safety Brooklyn Cheek and cornerback Ian Bell, and defensive tackle Dante Drake is questionable, a bigger worry against this opponent than any secondary loss.
Drives that end in points
The hidden edges lean toward Air Force. The Falcons score 4.71 points per scoring opportunity, 16th in FBS, while Wyoming manages 3.11, 116th. Air Force also converts 52.9% of third downs, 10th nationally, which is how those eight-play drives stay alive.
Ball security tilts the same way. Air Force turns it over 0.67 times per game, 21st, and Wyoming's defense takes it away just 0.57 times per game, 129th. Wyoming's one clean edge is its kicking: the Cowboys are 10 for 10 on field goals.
The number and the script
Air Force is a 6.5-point favorite, unchanged since the open, with a total of 44.5. Our model lands almost on top of the market: Air Force by 6.9, a 44.5 total, roughly 25.7 to 18.8, and a 33% chance of a Wyoming win.
Two things argue for caution on the favorite. The home team has won every meeting since 2021, including Wyoming's 31-19 win in Laramie in 2024. And Wyoming's record has come against weak opposition, with FBS opponents averaging an SP+ of -10.8, against -4.1 for Air Force.
If Air Force does cover, the likely route is the ground game. In tested games, the favorite's rushing went over its line 33.9% of the time when the favorite covered, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated, and our projection has the Falcons running for 309 yards.
Key players
- Evan Medders (Air Force): Since taking over for Szarka he has run for 296 yards at 7.6 per carry over the last three games, including 152 and three scores against UNLV.
- Owen Allen (Air Force): The complementary back has 214 rushing yards and three touchdowns over his last three games.
- Blake Fletcher (Air Force): Leads the defense with 64 tackles and has two interceptions this season.
- Jaylin Reese (Air Force): His 4.0 tackles for loss lead a front that rarely gets into the backfield.
- Tyler Hughes (Wyoming): Has 471 rushing yards this season, and 183 of them came in a four-touchdown game against Northern Illinois.
- Markell Holman (Wyoming): Leads Wyoming's backs with 390 rushing yards at 5.6 per carry.
- Samuel Harris (Wyoming): Expected back from a concussion, he has 326 rushing yards this season.
- Esaia Bogar (Wyoming): Leads the Cowboys with 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss.
Numbers that matter
| Wyoming line yards allowed rank | 133rd | Wyoming's front loses at the point of attack, the exact spot Air Force's line ranks second nationally. |
|---|---|---|
| Air Force rushing yards per game | 343.0 | Second in FBS, and nothing about the quarterback change has slowed it. |
| Air Force havoc allowed | 5.7% | Best in the country, which takes Wyoming's pass rush out of the game. |
| Points per scoring opportunity | 4.71 | Air Force ranks 16th at finishing drives, while Wyoming ranks 116th at 3.11. |
| Spread | 6.5 | Air Force is favored by this margin, unchanged since the open, and our number sits at 6.9. |
