Army Black Knights vs Tulsa Golden Hurricane prediction: Cale Hellums brings Army's No. 1 ground game to Tulsa's soft front

Tulsa's third straight option opponent is the best one yet, and the Golden Hurricane's run defense has not held up against the first two.

Quick take
  • Army grinds out long drives on the ground while Baylor Hayes hunts big throws against a passive Army defense, in a game priced within two points.
  • Hellums and Army's top-ranked rushing attack against a Tulsa run defense allowing 191.6 yards per game, 121st nationally.
  • Our number has Army by 0.4 and a total of 52.5, a touch friendlier to Tulsa than the 1.5-point market spread.

The option against a bending front

Army runs the ball more and better than anyone in the country. The Black Knights average 357.5 rushing yards per game, first in FBS. Their rushing EPA (expected points added per play) also ranks first. The push starts up front, where Army ranks 4th in line yards per carry, a measure of how much ground the offensive line creates before a back is touched.

Cale Hellums is the engine. He has run for 719 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, and the last three weeks turned him into a problem. He ran for 223 yards against Tulane. Then he piled up 195 yards and five touchdowns as Army ran for 479 yards in a 56-24 rout of Florida Atlantic. Monken said Tuesday, "We're really comfortable with whatever he can handle," while noting his health will need monitoring.

Tulsa's run defense is where this gets uncomfortable. The Golden Hurricane allow 191.6 rushing yards per game, 121st nationally. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, sits at 16.3%, which ranks 103rd. This is Tulsa's third straight option opponent, and the Navy leg of that stretch ended in a 34-26 loss. Over the last three games, Tulsa has allowed 32.0 points per game.

Hayes has room to throw

The other half of this game is an Army defense that rarely makes a play behind the line. The Black Knights rank 123rd in havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup. They also sit 128th with 1.0 sacks per game, so Hayes should get clean pockets.

He has been sharp lately. Over his last three games he has thrown for 728 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception, capped by a 20-of-27, 249-yard, three-touchdown night in the 38-17 win at Rice. Oran Singleton Jr. is the go-to target with 474 receiving yards, and David Wells Jr. has caught three touchdowns in his last three games.

The caveats are real. Hayes played through an unnamed injury earlier this month, and there has been no newer update. Receivers G. Tempest and D. Gee Jr. are listed questionable with undisclosed injuries. And Tulsa's offense as a whole stays on schedule too rarely: its 40.0% success rate (share of plays that keep an offense on schedule) ranks 108th.

Third downs and the turnover tug-of-war

The cleanest split in the packet is on third down. Army converts 52.0% of the time, 11th nationally. Tulsa converts just 31.3%, 126th. Against Army's defense, which allows 45.6% on third down (125th), Tulsa should get chances to extend drives. Whether it can is another matter.

Tulsa's best equalizer is the takeaway. The Golden Hurricane force 2.14 turnovers per game, 7th in FBS. Army almost never gives the ball away, at 0.33 per game (2nd). One fumble on a pitch could swing a game this tight. Army, by contrast, generates few turnovers of its own.

Kicking is shaky on both sides. Both teams make 66.7% of their field goals, and Tulsa's 91.3% extra-point rate ranks 129th. That number matters in a game where the spread sits inside a field goal.

A line that has not budged

Army opened as a 1.5-point favorite, and the line has not moved. The total holds at 52.5. Army has been favored in each of its last four games but covered only once, edging Temple and Tulane and losing outright at Louisiana Tech. The Black Knights are 2-3-1 against the spread.

The series adds an edge. Army won 49-7 at Tulsa in 2024, but Tulsa took last year's meeting 26-25 after scoring the final 12 points. Monken has kept the focus elsewhere this week: "Execution wins."

Our model makes this as close as it gets: Army by 0.4, a total of 52.5 and a 49.0% win probability for Tulsa. It shades slightly toward the home side compared with the market, but the gap is small.
