NC State Wolfpack vs Stanford Cardinal prediction: CJ Bailey gets a crack at the worst defense in FBS

Stanford ranks dead last in EPA allowed per play, and the only question is whether NC State's injury-thinned offensive line can hold up long enough to cash in.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 24, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • NC State should move the ball at will through the air. Stanford's best hope is a short game built on Micah Ford and field position.
  • Bailey should have time against a Stanford pass rush that ranks 136th in sacks per game and is missing cornerback Brandon Nicholson.
  • Our model makes NC State a 7.4-point favorite, about a point more than the market, with a fair total of 55.1.

Nobody stops anybody here

Stanford's defense ranks 138th of 138 in EPA allowed per play. EPA, or expected points added, measures how much each snap swings an offense's scoring odds. By that measure the Cardinal are also 137th against the run, and they rank last in points allowed per scoring opportunity at 5.06.

The recent tape is worse than the season line. Stanford gave up 40.7 points per game over its last three, a stretch that included a 3-57 loss at Wake Forest and a 7-58 loss at Notre Dame. There is no pass rush to speak of: 0.57 sacks per game ranks 136th, and Stanford's havoc rate (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup) ranks 134th.

That sets up well for CJ Bailey, who is completing 66.7% of his throws at 8.0 yards per attempt. He threw for 373 yards against Louisville. The secondary in front of him is thin, too. Linebacker Matt Rose is out for a third straight game, cornerback Brandon Nicholson is out, and nickel Lonnie McAllister is listed doubtful. NC State converts 51.7% of its third downs, 12th nationally, and Stanford allows 47.8%, 132nd. Drives should stay alive.

A patched-up Wolfpack front

The catch is the NC State offensive line, which looks nothing like the group that opened the season. Interior lineman Yousef Mugharbil and lineman Spike Sowells are both out for the year, and Teague Andersen and Jimarion McCrimon are the only Week 0 starters still available. Tight end Vander Ploog is done for the season, and running back Duke Scott is out after leaving the Louisville game.

The run game was already middling. NC State ranks 76th in line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the blockers create, at 3.03. Davion Gause has averaged 3.1 yards per carry over his last three games. That explains why our projection has the Wolfpack running for 128 yards, well short of their 168.5-yard season average.

Still, if any defense can make a rebuilt line look good, it's this one. Stanford allows 3.41 line yards per carry, 132nd. Receiver JoJo Trader missed the Wake Forest game and remains on the depth chart, with his status unclear. That 14-38 loss to Wake, in which the offense stalled after halftime, is the cautionary tale.

Stanford's narrow path

Stanford scores 18.3 points per game, 127th, and its offense has gotten worse lately: a 31.4% success rate over the last three games. Success rate is the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule.

The ground game runs straight into NC State's one real defensive strength. The Wolfpack's stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 23.6%, 21st nationally. Stanford averages 105.6 rushing yards per game, 129th. Micah Ford did tie the school record with four touchdowns against Elon, and he is listed probable after appearing on the injury report for the first time this week.

The better path runs through the air. NC State ranks 122nd in passing EPA allowed, and safety Tristan Teasdell is out. Davis Warren has protected the ball, with 7 touchdowns against 2 interceptions. But Stanford keeps starting drives from deep in its own end. Its average starting field position, the 24.6-yard line, ranks 136th. Its kicking hasn't helped either: 5 of 8 on field goals. NC State is 7 of 7.

Rest, the road and the number

NC State arrives on 13 days of rest against Stanford's six. That gives a banged-up roster time to heal and Dave Doeren two weeks to rework his line. The flip side is a six-game road losing streak and a 10:30 PM ET kickoff on the West Coast. Doeren is also coaching under questions about his job security after the Wake Forest loss.

Stanford, in Tavita Pritchard's first season, is trying to keep bowl hopes alive and hasn't played in the postseason since 2018. Neither team has rewarded backers: NC State is 2-4 against the spread, Stanford 2-5. NC State won the only previous meeting, 59-28 in Raleigh in 2024.

The line opened at NC State -7.5 and has dipped to -6.5, with the total at 55.5. Our numbers lean slightly the other way from that move. One tested pattern fits here: when favorites cover, their rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. If NC State's patched line can win against the 132nd-ranked run defense by line yards, the cover likely follows.

Key players

  • CJ Bailey (NC State): Has thrown for 1,507 yards at 8.0 yards per attempt with 9 touchdowns against 4 interceptions.
  • Keenan Jackson (NC State): Leads the receivers with 400 yards and 5 touchdowns on 27 catches.
  • Davion Gause (NC State): Carries more of the load with Duke Scott out, though he has averaged just 3.1 yards per carry over his last three games.
  • Elijah Satchell (NC State): Has 3.0 sacks this season, 2.0 of them in the last three games.
  • Davis Warren (Stanford): Has thrown for 1,630 yards with 7 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions.
  • Micah Ford (Stanford): Has 8 rushing touchdowns, including a 179-yard, four-touchdown game against Elon.
  • Caden High (Stanford): Leads Stanford receivers with 307 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • Gabe Kaminski (Stanford): Has 2.0 sacks for a defense that rarely gets home.
