Los Angeles Clippers vs Golden State Warriors prediction: Without Curry and Green, Warriors bet on the Clippers' loose handle

Golden State is favored with its two anchors resting, because a Clippers team on a four-game skid keeps giving away the possessions a short-handed opponent needs.

Quick take
  • Expect a grind: a Warriors team without Curry hunting steals and offensive boards against a Clippers group that ranks last in turnover rate.
  • The matchup to watch is Clippers ball handlers against Golden State's pressure, which forces turnovers at the 4th-highest rate in the league.
  • Warriors -2.5 with a total of 219, unchanged since first posted. The Clippers' offense ranks 28th in efficiency, which helps explain the low total.

The handle problem

Stephen Curry and Draymond Green will both sit Sunday, and Golden State is still favored. That says less about the Warriors than about a Clippers team that has lost four straight and keeps handing the ball away. Without its two anchors, Golden State needs extra possessions, and Los Angeles has been the league's most generous source of them.

The Clippers turn it over on 21.9% of their possessions (turnover rate: giveaways per 100 trips), 30th of 30. Golden State forces turnovers at the 4th-highest rate in the league. The Warriors also lead the NBA in offensive rebound rate, the share of their own misses they grab back, at 33.9%. The Clippers rank 22nd on the defensive glass. Steals and second chances are the cleanest route to points for a lineup missing its best shooter and its chief organizer.

The Clippers can play this game too. Their steal rate ranks 3rd, and Golden State's own turnover rate sits 24th. Whichever team wins the scramble for loose possessions probably wins the night.

Who's in street clothes

Curry is resting on the first night of a back-to-back and is expected to play Monday against Phoenix. Green is out while the team manages his back. Gui Santos (knee tendinitis) is listed as probable after being cleared to play Friday. Kristaps Porzingis remains away from the team indefinitely, and the Warriors are exploring trades involving him. Jimmy Butler (torn ACL) and Moses Moody (patellar tendon) are still months away.

More of the load falls on rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who Steve Kerr said has changed Golden State "dramatically" in five games, and on a bench that outscored the Lakers' reserves 50-7 on Friday. Brandon Williams, who averaged 13.0 points for Dallas last season, figures to handle the ball more.

The Clippers are thinner still. Brandon Ingram (Achilles), Bradley Beal (knee), Max Strus (foot) and Yanic Konan Niederhauser (foot) are all out, with none projected back before Nov. 8. Rui Hachimura was last listed as a game-time decision with a quad issue on Oct. 29, and the Clippers haven't given a newer status. The roster returns just 48.7% of last season's minutes after Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Ivica Zubac left. Last season's 42-40 team is a poor guide. The offense now runs through Darius Garland and rookie Keaton Wagler.

Open lanes on both ends

Both teams can shoot. The Clippers make 39.2% of their threes, 2nd in the league, and Golden State is right behind them in 3rd. Inside the arc it gets ugly. Opponents score 56.0 paint points a game against Los Angeles, 29th in the league. Golden State lets opponents hit 59.9% of their twos, 28th in the league.

The bigger problem is the Clippers' scoring. They manage 102.9 points per 100 possessions, 28th in the league, and scored 38 in the first half of their home loss to the Lakers. Golden State's defense ranks only 22nd, so there are points available if Los Angeles can protect the ball long enough to get a shot up.

A short line, a low total

The Warriors are 2.5-point favorites with a total of 219, and neither number has moved since our feed first saw the game Sunday morning. Golden State is 4-2 against the spread and covered its last four, all of them as an underdog. The Clippers are 3-2 against the spread but missed their last two, including a 127-101 loss in Minnesota.

History points both ways. Los Angeles won three of four meetings last regular season, including a 114-101 win at Chase Center in March. Golden State then ended the Clippers' season in the play-in tournament in April. Both of these rosters look different now.

What to watch

  • Clippers turnovers in the first quarter, before Golden State's bench pressure arrives
  • Warriors second-chance points with Green out
  • Whether Hachimura plays, and how much scoring he adds to an offense that needs it
