Toronto Raptors vs Los Angeles Lakers prediction: Toronto's turnover machine tests the Lakers' league-best shooting without Kawhi
The Lakers make shots better than anyone but give the ball away often, and a Leonard-less Raptors team has built its start on taking it.
| Spread | Los Angeles Lakers -3 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 224.5 |
- Expect the Lakers to score efficiently in the half court while Toronto hunts steals and runs; the turnover battle likely sets the margin.
- Lakers ball security against Toronto's league-best forced turnover rate, with Scottie Barnes carrying the Raptors' offense while Kawhi Leonard sits.
- The Lakers are 4.5-point favorites with a 227.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw it; Toronto has gone under in three of five.
Shot-making against takeaways
The Lakers have been the best shooting team in the league. Their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 makes, sits at 59.2%, first of 30. When they get a shot up, it usually goes well.
The problem is getting the shot up. Their turnover rate of 17.5 per 100 possessions ranks 27th, and that is the exact weakness Toronto is built to exploit. The Raptors force turnovers on 20.4% of opponent possessions, first in the league, and rank second in steal rate. They turn those takeaways into points faster than anyone, scoring 20.6 fast-break points per game, also first.
Toronto needs every one of those extra trips. Its own half-court offense has been clunky: a 51.1% effective field goal percentage ranks 22nd. The Raptors do protect the ball, with a turnover rate that ranks 3rd, which blunts a Lakers defense that also forces plenty of mistakes. If the Lakers keep their giveaways to a normal number, their shooting edge should carry them. If they don't, Toronto gets the open-floor game it wants.
Barnes carries the load
Kawhi Leonard is out with left knee inflammation. He is expected to miss about three to four weeks, though an MRI showed no structural damage. With Brandon Ingram gone to the Clippers, the scoring falls on Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, none of whom is on the injury report.
Barnes answered Friday with a career-high 41 points on 19-of-34 shooting in a loss to Orlando. Rajakovic questioned the officiating afterward because Barnes went to the line only three times. Center Nate Bittle's status is unsettled: one Sunday report lists him day-to-day with a foot injury, another lists him out with a fracture.
The Lakers look like a different team from last season, returning just 39.9% of last season's minutes after LeBron James left for Philadelphia. Luka Doncic remains the engine after averaging 33.5 points last season. He sat out the Oct. 28 game at the Clippers with back tightness, then came off the report and played Friday; he isn't listed on the latest injury report. Ziaire Williams is questionable with a left foot injury and could be downgraded before tip. Adou Thiero is out, while rookie Cameron Carr is off the report and could make his NBA debut.
Whistles and the glass
Two other battles could offset the turnover story, and they cut in opposite directions.
The Lakers live at the line. Their free throw rate, free throw attempts per field goal attempt, is 36.6%, 2nd in the league. Toronto has fouled more than anyone: opponents have a 41.8% free throw rate against the Raptors, ranked 30th. That gives the Lakers a way to score without risking a live-ball turnover.
Toronto's counter is the offensive glass. The Raptors grab 31.3% of their own misses, 4th in the league, and the Lakers have struggled to finish defensive possessions, ranking 28th in defensive rebound rate. For a Raptors team that has struggled to shoot, second chances matter as much as steals.
The number and the schedule
The Lakers are 4.5-point favorites, with a moneyline of -190, and the total sits at 227.5. Neither has moved since our feed first recorded the game Sunday morning.
The Lakers are 3-3 against the spread and have failed to cover as favorites against the Clippers, Portland and Golden State. They are coming off a loss at Golden State in which they led by 23 after the first quarter, and they are in the middle of a five-games-in-seven-nights stretch. Toronto's games have gone under in three of five.
Schedule matters here. The Raptors play at the Clippers on Monday, the second night of a back-to-back, so watch how Rajakovic manages minutes late if this one gets away. The Lakers won both meetings last season, including 110-93 at home in January.
