Boston Celtics vs Orlando Magic prediction: Franz Wagner and a depleted Magic face Boston's dare-you-to-shoot defense

With Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs out, Orlando's offense runs through Wagner and the three-point line, which is exactly where the Celtics want it.

Quick take
  • Boston's defense should push a short-handed Orlando outside; unless the Magic shoot hot, the Celtics' deeper rotation likely controls the second half.
  • Watch Franz Wagner, fresh off 26 points and 11 assists, against a Celtics defense allowing the fewest paint points in the league.
  • Boston is a 6.5-point road favorite with a 222.5 total, unmoved since our feed first saw it; Orlando ranks 22nd in offensive efficiency.

Orlando without its engine

The Magic come home to a building where they haven't won yet this season, and they come home thin. Paolo Banchero is out with a right high-ankle sprain expected to cost four to six weeks. Jalen Suggs has a mild bone bruise in his right knee and was set to be re-evaluated in two weeks from Oct. 26. Jonathan Isaac (knee), Noah Penda (hamstring) and Izaiyah Nelson (ankle surgery) are also out.

That leaves Franz Wagner as the unquestioned focal point. He answered Friday with season highs of 26 points and 11 assists in a 121-114 NBA Cup win at Toronto, while Desmond Bane added a season-best 28. Two nights earlier the same Raptors beat Orlando by 30.

The season baseline is rough. Orlando scores 106.2 points per 100 possessions, 22nd of 30, and its net efficiency of -8.3 ranks 24th. The 0-2 home record includes a 22-point loss to Minnesota.

Boston dares you to shoot

The Celtics' defense has a clear identity: wall off the rim and let opponents fire away. Boston allows 38.0 paint points per game, fewest in the league. In return, opponents take 51.0% of their shots from three against Boston, the highest share in the NBA.

That plays into Orlando's habits. The Magic launch threes at the 5th-highest rate, but they make only 35.3% of them, 13th in the league. Inside, they score 44.0 paint points per game, 22nd, without Banchero's downhill bulk. Orlando moves the ball well, ranking 2nd in assist rate (the share of made baskets that come off a pass), so the open looks should come. Whether they fall will decide whether this stays close.

A faster Boston without Jaylen Brown

This is not last season's Celtics. Jaylen Brown, who averaged 28.7 points, is now in Philadelphia, and the roster returns 74.7% of last season's minutes. Paul George arrived from the 76ers, where he averaged 17.3 points and shot 39.2% from three last season.

The style has shifted too. Boston played the slowest pace in the league last season and now ranks 10th, and the offense still produces 115.3 points per 100 possessions, 5th in the NBA. The Celtics have been especially sharp early, scoring 61.6 first-half points per game (4th) while allowing 51.6 (3rd). Orlando gives up 61.0 before halftime, 24th.

Robinson, rest and possessions

Mitchell Robinson was listed as questionable with a rest designation as of Oct. 31, and Boston hasn't confirmed whether he plays. The Celtics are on the front end of a back-to-back, with a game in Houston on Monday. If Robinson sits, Neemias Queta should start at center, with Luka Garza in line for extended run. Devin Carter remains out while recovering from mononucleosis.

The possession battle tilts toward Boston. The Celtics force turnovers on 17.6% of opponent possessions, 5th in the league, while Orlando coughs it up at the 22nd-worst rate. The one Magic counter is the foul line: Orlando's free throw rate (free throw attempts per shot) ranks 6th, and Boston's defense ranks 27th at keeping opponents off the line. On the glass, Boston's 27th-ranked defensive rebounding is offset by an Orlando offensive rebounding rate that ranks 28th.

Where the line sits

Boston is favored by 6.5 on the road, at -250 on the moneyline, with the total at 222.5. Neither number has moved since our feed first recorded it.

Boston has been a poor bet at big numbers so far, going 2-3 against the spread and failing to cover as a double-digit favorite against Brooklyn in an overtime escape and in its latest game against Chicago. Last season the Celtics went 42-23 against the spread and 23-42 on overs. Orlando is also 2-3 against the spread, with both covers coming as an underdog, including a 111-102 win at New York. Boston won the last three meetings last season.
