Sacramento Kings vs San Antonio Spurs prediction: Kings' missing big men face a Spurs team that wins inside
Sacramento arrives winless and short on size, and San Antonio's paint scoring and fast break are working even while its half-court offense sputters.
| Spread | San Antonio Spurs -18.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 232.5 |
- Spurs control the paint and the open floor; the Kings need LaVine and Monk to get hot from outside to keep it close.
- San Antonio's transition attack against a Kings frontcourt missing Raynaud, Cardwell and Murray.
- Spurs are 18-point favorites, unchanged since our feed first saw the game, while San Antonio is 0-3 to the under.
Nobody home at the rim
San Antonio reached the 2026 Finals last season and lost there. Three games into this one, the Spurs are 1-2 and still looking for their offense. Sacramento is winless, injured up front and facing an 18-point spread, and the question is whether the Spurs can use a softer opponent to get right.
The Kings' biggest problem sits under the basket. They block just 4.7% of opponents' two-point attempts, 29th in the league, and give up 54.0 paint points a game. Maxime Raynaud is out with a dislocated right knee and will be re-evaluated in about two weeks. Dylan Cardwell (calf) and Keegan Murray (ankle) are also listed out, and Ben Simmons is done for the season after Achilles surgery. Precious Achiuwa has reportedly moved into the starting five next to Sabonis.
That is a bad setup against a Spurs team scoring 53.3 points a game in the paint (6th) and 21.3 on the fast break (3rd). San Antonio doesn't need to shoot well to win this game. It needs to keep getting downhill.
The Spurs' offense is still stuck
San Antonio is scoring 107.0 points per 100 possessions, 21st in the league, after finishing 4th in offensive efficiency last season. Roster turnover isn't the cause: the Spurs return 93.9% of last season's minutes.
Part of it is the lineup. Tobias Harris, the offseason signing, is ruled out again with a calf strain, his third straight absence to open the year. Mitch Johnson has gone to a three-guard group of De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, with Devin Vassell also starting. The Dallas game showed what this group looks like when it clicks: San Antonio trailed late in the third quarter, then pulled away over the final 13 minutes to win 122-106.
Sacramento's defense is a good place to find rhythm. The Kings allow 119.2 points per 100 possessions, 28th of 30.
The shots Sacramento won't take
The Kings' best counter targets the one weakness in San Antonio's defense, but they rarely use it. Sacramento has the lowest 3-point attempt rate in the league, and it is hitting just 28.3% of the threes it does take.
The Spurs allow fewer three-point attempts than anyone, yet opponents have made 41.7% of them, worst in the league. If that keeps up, Malik Monk and Zach LaVine are the Kings' path to a cover. Monk shot 39.5% from three for Sacramento last season, and LaVine scored 37 in Sunday's loss to Memphis. Rookie Darius Acuff Jr. set an NBA record for field-goal attempts through a player's first three career games, so the ball will find him too.
Second chances won't help much. San Antonio rebounds 78.3% of opponents' misses, 4th in the league, and it ranks 1st at keeping opponents off the free throw line.
Laying 18 with a slow offense
Every book has San Antonio at -18 with a total of 230.5, and neither number has moved since our feed first saw the game Tuesday morning.
The total points one way. All three Spurs games this season have gone under, and San Antonio went under 39 times in 66 lined games last season. The Kings have gone over in two of three.
The spread is a bigger ask. San Antonio is 1-2 against the spread this season, while Sacramento covered as 9.5-point underdogs at Portland. History favors the Spurs: they won all three meetings last season, including 132-104 in Sacramento.

Numbers that matter
| Kings block rate | 4.7% | Ranks 29th, and Sacramento is missing Raynaud and Cardwell up front. |

| Spurs offensive efficiency | 107.0 | Points per 100 possessions, 21st, a long way from their 4th-place finish last season. |
| Spurs opponent 3-point % | 41.7% | Worst in the league, though Sacramento attempts threes less often than any team. |
