Portland Trail Blazers vs Los Angeles Lakers prediction: Doncic's red-hot Lakers test Portland's suffocating new defense

The league's most efficient offense faces a Blazers defense that has held opponents to 22.6% from three, and the rebounding battle may settle the 3-point spread.

Quick take
  • Expect a tight game decided inside: Portland's rebounders pressure a thin Lakers frontcourt while Doncic and the Lakers attack the rim and draw fouls.
  • Watch Portland's offensive glass against the Lakers' defensive rebounding: 4th in offensive rebound rate against 29th in defensive rebound rate.
  • Lakers -3 with a 236.5 total, both unchanged since our feed's first line; Portland won two of three meetings last season.

Something has to slow down

Two unbeaten teams, two rebuilt rosters and one late tip at crypto.com Arena. The Lakers (3-0) have scored more efficiently than anyone, and the Trail Blazers (2-0) have defended almost as well as anyone. Both cannot keep that pace past tonight.

Los Angeles is scoring 122.8 points per 100 possessions, 1st in the league. Its effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 shots, is 63.8%, also 1st. Luka Doncic set the tone Sunday with 52 points in a comeback win at Utah after the Lakers trailed by 18.

Portland has done the opposite at the other end. The Blazers allow 98.0 points per 100 possessions, 2nd in the league, and opponents are making just 22.6% of their threes, the lowest mark in the league. They held Phoenix to 39 first-half points in a 124-83 opening rout. Those are two-game numbers and will cool, but the Lakers have not yet faced a defense this disruptive.

Portland's edge on the glass

The clearest mismatch is on the boards. Portland grabs 33.3% of its own misses, 4th in the league. The Lakers collect only 65.7% of opponents' misses, 29th. That gap could hand the Blazers second chances all night.

Donovan Clingan leads that effort; he averaged 11.6 rebounds last season. The Lakers lost Deandre Ayton this offseason and still lack a reliable backup center. Opponents are scoring 54.0 points in the paint per game against them, 26th in the league. If Portland's bigs dominate the paint, the Lakers' shooting may not be enough.

The Lakers' answer: the free throw line

Los Angeles gets to the line as often as anyone. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) is 37.2%, 2nd in the league. Portland's defense ranks 19th in how often it sends opponents to the line, and its own offense draws few fouls.

The Blazers also offer little resistance at the rim. Their block rate is 4.4%, 30th of 30. Doncic and Austin Reaves, who scored 29 at Utah, should keep driving into a defense that doesn't contest well at the rim.

Rebuilt rosters on both benches

These are not last season's teams. Players still on the Lakers roster played only 39.9% of last season's minutes for the club; LeBron James is now in Philadelphia. Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili all arrived this offseason, so last season's Lakers numbers say little about this group.

Portland kept more of its core under new coach Micah Nori. It added Ja Morant, who averaged 19.4 points for Memphis last season. Damian Lillard is back from his Achilles tear, and the two opened the season in the starting backcourt with Jrue Holiday off the bench. Deni Avdija scored 26 in Friday's win at Sacramento.

Availability still shapes both rotations. Shaedon Sharpe is out after knee surgery, with a return expected around March. Scoot Henderson (left ankle) and Branden Carlson (concussion) are questionable. For the Lakers, Adou Thiero (knee) is listed out in the league report, while the official report had him and Cameron Carr (oblique) questionable. Jake LaRavia, who sprained his ankle last week, is not on the report. Portland comes in on four days' rest, the Lakers on two.

What the market says

The Lakers are 3-point home favorites, and the total sits at 236.5. Neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game Tuesday morning, so the market sees no edge either way.

History leans slightly to Portland, which won two of three meetings last season. The most recent was a 132-116 win in Portland on Jan. 17. The Blazers were also a dependable cover last season at 36-29 against the spread, though both rosters have changed a lot since then.
