What are the fair odds without the book’s cut?
Remove the sportsbook margin from a two-way market to get the fair win chance, fair odds and the book’s hold.
How it works
- Each side’s implied probability is divided by their sum, so the two add up to 100%.
- Hold = 1 − 1 / (sum of implied probabilities). -110 / -110 holds 4.5%.
- This is the multiplicative method. It is most accurate on sharp, close-to-even markets such as Pinnacle’s.
Questions
Which book should I de-vig?
The sharpest one you can see, usually Pinnacle. A fair price from a soft book carries its errors along.
What is a good hold?
Under 3% is a low-margin market. Spreads and totals at US books are usually 4.5%; player props and parlays are often 7% or more.
