Detroit Red Wings vs Florida Panthers prediction: Florida's power play takes aim at Detroit's 28th-ranked penalty kill

The Panthers live on the man advantage, and a short-handed Red Wings team with a struggling probable starter may not be able to stay out of the box long enough to hang around.

Total (over/under)5.5

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:05 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a choppy, penalty-heavy game in Sunrise where Florida's special teams and steadier defense give the Panthers the edge over a depleted Detroit lineup.
  • Florida's power play against Detroit's penalty kill: the Panthers draw the most power plays in the league, and the Red Wings kill just 68.9% of them.
  • Florida is a -180 moneyline favorite with the total at 5.5, unchanged since our feed first saw it; the Panthers are 5-9 on the puck line.

The man advantage decides it

Florida plays on the edge of the rulebook, and its penalty box stays busy. The difference is what happens next. No team draws more power plays than the Panthers, who earn 4.71 per game, 1st of 32. They convert 24.2% of them (power-play goals per opportunity), 9th in the league.

That runs straight into Detroit's weakest unit. The Red Wings' penalty kill, the share of opponent power plays survived without allowing a goal, sits at 68.9%, 28th in the NHL.

The catch is Florida's own discipline. The Panthers are shorthanded more often than any team in the league, and Detroit's power play is respectable at 22.9%. Florida can afford the trips to the box better than most, because its own kill ranks 7th.

Gibson's numbers are the worry

John Gibson is the probable starter for Detroit, though the team hasn't confirmed it. It has been a rough start for him. Through 10 appearances, his save percentage is 86.0%. His goals-against average is 3.37.

Daniil Tarasov has been the better goalie in a smaller role, stopping 94.0% of the shots he has faced, and he was cleared to play on Oct. 29 after an undisclosed issue. If Detroit turns to him instead, the picture changes.

Akira Schmid is expected to start for Florida with Jacob Markstrom still on injured reserve. Markstrom took part in the morning skate on Oct. 30, and Paul Maurice called him "not far off," but no return has been announced. Schmid owns an 88.9% save percentage and a 2.86 goals-against average. Two weeks of goaltending is a small sample in either crease.

Two thinned-out lineups

Detroit's biggest story sits off the ice. Former captain Dylan Larkin is suspended without pay, and the team says he won't play until he is traded. Centers Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton are on injured reserve, with Todd McLellan saying on Oct. 30 both were still weeks from returning. Defenseman Albert Johansson was listed as day-to-day on Nov. 1 yet still appears in projected pairs, so his status is unsettled. Simon Edvinsson has been on the non-roster list in a contract dispute since mid-October.

The scoring has come from elsewhere. Viktor Arvidsson has 8 goals and posted a hat trick in the Oct. 29 win over Chicago, the first game after Larkin's suspension. Alex DeBrincat leads the team with 15 points.

Florida is missing plenty too. Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand are both on injured reserve; Marchand has started skating, with a timeline of roughly three weeks given on Oct. 29. Matthew Tkachuk has carried the playmaking load with 16 assists.

Detroit shoots plenty, finishes little

The Red Wings control the puck better than their record suggests. Their shot share, a team's portion of all shots in its games, is 54.9%, 4th in the league. The finishing hasn't followed: Detroit converts just 9.4% of its shots, 29th.

Florida is the wrong opponent for a team trying to find its touch. The Panthers allow only 24.1 shots per game, 3rd in the NHL, and they lead the league in hits. They block the fewest shots, though, which leaves lanes open for Detroit's volume shooters.

What the market says

Florida is a -180 favorite at home, with Detroit at +155. The puck line is Florida -1.5 and the total is 5.5, and neither has moved since our feed first recorded the game.

The Panthers have been more reliable to win than to win big. They are 5-9 on the puck line this season, while Detroit has gone over the total in 8 of its 14 games. Florida also took the final three meetings last season, capped by an 8-1 rout in Sunrise in April.
