Calgary Flames vs San Jose Sharks prediction: Dustin Wolf carries Calgary's crease into San Jose with Cooley sidelined

With Devin Cooley on injured reserve, the Flames lean on a goalie stopping 84.7% of shots, against a Sharks team that gives up shots in bulk and hasn't settled its own net.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:05 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a busy night in both creases. Both teams rank near the bottom in shots allowed, which puts Calgary's thin goaltending under real pressure.
  • Watch Wolf against the Sharks' power play. San Jose draws 3.47 power plays per game, 6th in the league, and Calgary takes plenty of penalties.
  • San Jose is a -135 favorite with the total at 6.5, both unchanged since our feed first saw the game. Calgary is 1-5-0 on the road.

The Wolf question

The most important fact about tonight's game happened last Wednesday in Edmonton. Devin Cooley took a hit in his crease, landed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and is considered week-to-week, with an estimated return of Nov. 14. He had been Calgary's best goalie, posting a 91.4% save percentage over seven games.

That leaves Dustin Wolf as the probable starter, with Arsenii Sergeev behind him. Wolf has had a rough start, with an 84.7% save percentage and a 4.39 goals-against average in his seven games. As a team, Calgary's save percentage sits 26th in the league. Seven starts is a small sample for any goalie, but Wolf has no partner to share the load until Cooley returns.

San Jose's net is less settled than its depth chart suggests. Yaroslav Askarov is listed as the probable starter, but other projections point to Alex Nedeljkovic, who started Saturday and has taken more of the work lately. The coach has said he's comfortable playing either goalie against anyone. The gap between them is tiny: Askarov stops 90.0% of shots, Nedeljkovic 89.9%.

A penalty fight Calgary can't afford

Calgary's power play is lethal when it gets the chance. It converts 33.3% of its opportunities (power-play goals per chance), 3rd in the league. The problem is how rarely the Flames earn those chances: they draw 2.36 power plays per game, which ranks 31st.

The other side of the ledger looks worse for them. The Flames rank 29th in penalty minutes at 12.2 per game, and San Jose is good at drawing calls. The Sharks' penalty kill, which stops 84.0% of opponents' chances, ranks 8th. If the whistles pile up, the Sharks are better built to profit from them.

Shots everywhere, finishing nowhere

Neither team keeps the puck out of its own end. San Jose allows 30.9 shots per game, 31st in the league, and owns just 46.7% of all shots in its games (shot share). That would normally be bad news for the home side. Tonight, though, it may put more rubber on Askarov or Nedeljkovic than on a struggling Wolf.

Calgary generates volume, ranking 10th with 28.5 shots per game, but cashes in on only 9.0% of them, 31st in the league. Joel Farabee (15 points) and Matt Coronato (14) drive the offense, with Matvei Gridin chipping in five goals.

For San Jose, Macklin Celebrini leads the way with 16 points in 13 games, though he enters on a five-game goalless run. Will Smith leads the Sharks with six goals. Facing a goalie at Wolf's numbers, a Celebrini breakout is a reasonable thing to watch for.

Health, history and the market

Both teams are short-handed. Calgary is also without Connor Zary, Jonathan Huberdeau and Samuel Honzek, and Brennan Othmann was day-to-day as of Sunday. San Jose is missing Alexander Wennberg and Igor Chernyshov. Darnell Nurse is projected in the lineup but has no official update.

The Flames have been a different team away from home, going 1-5-0 on the road, including Saturday's 5-2 loss in Colorado. They did win the last two meetings with the Sharks last season, 3-2 in Calgary and 4-1 at SAP Center. San Jose comes in off a 5-1 home loss to Ottawa.

The market makes the Sharks modest favorites at -135, with Calgary at +114. Neither the total of 6.5 nor the puck line has moved since our feed first recorded them. Both teams sit near even on overs and unders this season, so the total question likely comes down to whether Wolf steadies.
