Tulane Green Wave vs Charlotte 49ers prediction: Tulane's all-or-nothing offense tries to regroup at reeling Charlotte
The Green Wave lead the country in explosiveness and rank near the bottom in staying on schedule, and six turnovers against UTSA showed how fast that can go wrong.
| Spread | Tulane -8 |
|---|
- Tulane should move the ball in chunks against a Charlotte defense allowing 40.6 points per game, but turnovers decide whether the margin clears the spread.
- Johnnie Daniels and a Tulane line without RT Ryan Mickow against Charlotte's run front, the one part of its defense that holds up.
- Our number makes Tulane a 13.66-point favorite with a 45.5 total, essentially matching the market.
Big plays, little else
Tulane's season has swung between upsetting Memphis and getting run off its own field by UTSA. On a short week, the Green Wave visit the worst team in the conference standings, needing a win to keep alive any hope of a fifth straight AAC title game trip.
The offense explains the swings. Tulane ranks 1st in explosiveness, a measure of how much value a team gets from its successful plays, and 137th in success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. At 32.4%, almost nobody stays ahead of the chains less often. The Green Wave live on chunk gains and stall on second-and-long.
Charlotte is a forgiving opponent for that profile. The 49ers allow a 48.7% success rate, 134th nationally. Against the pass they give up 0.403 EPA (expected points added) per play, 133rd. Over their last three games they allowed 46.7 points per game. Tulane's explosive plays should travel well against that defense, even if its routine ones haven't.
The catch is finishing. Tulane scores 2.86 points per scoring opportunity, 123rd, so long drives that stall become field goals.
A patched line, a hot back
Tulane's front was already a weakness. It averages 2.61 line yards per carry (the rushing yardage credited to the offensive line), 130th, and allows havoc on 20.1% of plays, 135th. Havoc counts tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, interceptions and pass breakups. Now right tackle Ryan Mickow, carted off against UTSA, is not expected to play.
Maurice Turner has reportedly been sidelined with an undisclosed injury, which would put the backfield on Johnnie Daniels. He has 226 yards on 23 carries over his last three games, including 104 against UTSA. Charlotte creates little chaos, with an 11.4% havoc rate that ranks 132nd. Its 20.5% stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, ranks 46th and is the best number on that defense.
The other side of the ball favors Charlotte's best player. Tulane allows 214.0 rushing yards per game, 132nd, and lets opponents convert 50.0% of third downs. Henry Rutledge has 272 yards over his last three games, with 123 against Temple. He has been the exception in a run game that ranks 134th in rushing EPA.
Rest against desperation
Charlotte comes off a bye with 13 days of rest, against six for Tulane. The 49ers last played on Oct. 17, beating Temple 38-31 as Conner Harrell accounted for four total scores. Harrell took over from Cole Gonzales, who threw seven interceptions in five games, and appears set to stay under center. Charlotte hasn't officially named a Friday starter.
Tulane arrives off a 42-19 home loss to UTSA that started with a pick-six on the first play and unraveled through six turnovers. Will Hall, in his first season, called the performance "embarrassing," and questions about him and his staff have resurfaced. Trace Johnson started that game and went 24-of-44 for 265 yards. Tulane hasn't confirmed its Friday starter.
Turnovers and short fields
Ball security may matter more than any matchup. Charlotte gives the ball away 2.29 times per game, 137th nationally, and Tulane's defense takes it away 1.43 times per game, 37th. Kevin Adams picked off two passes against Memphis. Tulane is careless too, at 1.57 giveaways per game, 110th.
Field position tilts toward the visitors. Tulane's net punting average of 46.5 yards ranks 6th, and Charlotte's offense already starts drives at its own 26.1 on average, 129th. Once opponents get close, Charlotte allows 4.56 points per scoring opportunity, 132nd. That is the cure for Tulane's own finishing problem.
Where the number sits
Tulane opened as a 13.5-point favorite and hasn't moved across 11 books, with the total at 45.5. The Green Wave won the last two meetings 34-3 and 27-0. Their last turn as a big favorite was less convincing: a 24-21 win over Southern Miss as an 18-point favorite.
Our model lands on Tulane by 13.66 and a 45.5 total, projecting roughly 29.6 to 15.9 and giving Charlotte a 19.0% chance to win. One tested pattern fits the likely script: when the favorite covers, its rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. If Tulane covers, Daniels is probably part of why.

| Tulane success rate | 32.4% | Ranks 137th, the flip side of an offense that leads the country in explosiveness. |
