Baylor Bears vs UCF Knights prediction: Joe Klanderman's Pass Rush Is Baylor's Best Argument at UCF
Baylor fired its coach on Sunday and handed the team to the defensive coordinator, whose front now has to rattle a UCF offense riding its biggest win.
| Spread | Baylor -2.5 |
|---|
- Expect a tight, defense-led game: Baylor's front generates negative plays, UCF finishes drives better, and the Bears' boom-or-bust offense swings the result.
- Baylor's pass rush, third nationally in sacks, against Keyone Jenkins, Frost's 'hot hand' at quarterback.
- Our model makes Baylor a 0.6-point favorite with a 48.0 total, a touch closer than the market's 1.5.
The coordinator takes over
The coordinator takes over Baylor fired Dave Aranda on Oct. 25, the day after a 25-24 loss at Kansas in which a late field goal was blocked and a 14-game Bears winning streak in the series ended. The program handed the interim job to Joe Klanderman, its first-year defensive coordinator, and he will keep calling the defense. That matters, because defense is the part of this team that works.
Baylor ranks 3rd in the country with 3.86 sacks per game and 5th in tackles for loss. Its EPA allowed (expected points added per play, where lower is better for a defense) ranks 9th. The Bears also sit 12th in havoc rate, the share of plays that end in a sack, tackle for loss, takeaway or pass breakup.
The caution is recent form. Baylor's defense has allowed a 38.0% success rate over its last three games, worse than its season figure of 34.9%. Success rate is the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, and a front that is slipping won't win this game alone.
UCF's protection has held up, allowing 1.43 sacks per game, 42nd nationally. Jenkins completes 67.9% of his passes, and Frost named him the starter Monday, calling him the "hot hand." Alonza Barnett III is still working back from a hamstring injury, and Frost said "I don't know if he's 100% yet."
Baylor's all-or-nothing offense
Baylor's offense either stalls or explodes. Its success rate of 37.8% ranks 126th of 138, yet its explosiveness ranks 8th. The Bears rarely stay on schedule, but when a play hits, it hits big.
D.J. Lagway embodies the swing. He completed 25 of 40 for 306 yards against Arizona State, then went 22 of 53 against TCU in a 17-6 home loss. Gavin Freeman is the steady piece, with 23 catches for 314 yards over the last three games.
UCF's pass defense gives Lagway room. The Knights rank 108th in passing yards allowed and 91st in havoc, so Lagway should get cleaner pockets than he usually sees. The ground game is a different story: Dawson Pendergrass has averaged 2.1 yards per carry over his last three games, and UCF ranks 15th in line yards allowed, a measure of how far runners get before the second level. Caden Knighten, at 6.3 yards per carry in that span, may deserve the bigger share.
Who finishes drives
This may be the hidden edge. UCF scores 4.83 points per scoring opportunity, 10th nationally. Baylor's defense allows just 2.39, 6th. Something in the red zone breaks one way or the other, and it decides a game priced this close.
Baylor's own finishing is poor, ranking 107th in points per opportunity. The Bears also hurt themselves. They rank 110th in turnovers per game and 124th in penalty yards, and UCF takes the ball away well, ranking 18th in takeaways.
Baylor gets some of that back on the punt team. Its net punting average of 50.0 yards leads the country, and the Bears' offense starts drives with the 8th-best average field position. Duke Watson, averaging 6.8 yards per carry, gives UCF a back who can flip that field back, but the Knights' line ranks 103rd in line yards and Baylor's stuff rate sits 26th.
What the 4-3 records hide
What the 4-3 records hide Both teams are 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big 12, but they got there differently. UCF's FBS opponents average an SP+ of 8.3, against 2.2 for Baylor's, and the Knights just beat BYU 39-31 in double overtime on Jenkins' touchdown pass to Grayson Brousseau. The cost has shown on defense: UCF has allowed 33.3 points per game over its last three.
The market has moved. UCF opened at -2.5, and the line has moved from UCF -2.5 to Baylor -1.5, with a total of 48.0. Both teams are 5-2 against the spread. Our model makes Baylor a 0.6-point favorite with a matching 48.0 total and gives the Knights a 48% chance to win, slightly warmer on UCF than the market. Whether Klanderman's first week brings a jolt or a hangover is the variable no number captures.
