Kent State Golden Flashes vs Sacramento State prediction: Wayne Harris gets a shot at Sacramento State's shaken secondary

Kent State's hottest receiver faces a Hornets pass defense that rarely pressures the quarterback and just fired its cornerbacks coach.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Kent State should move the ball through the air and lead most of the night. Its own finishing problems may keep the margin tighter than it should be.
  • Wayne Harris against Sacramento State's cornerbacks, a group that lost its position coach this week and faces a pass rush ranked 135th in havoc.
  • Our number makes Kent State a 9.8-point favorite, a bit more than the 8.5 market, with a fair total matching 46.5.

Harris against a secondary in flux

Two of the lowest-rated teams in FBS meet on Friday night, and one matchup stands out. Wayne Harris has become Kent State's most dangerous player, catching 24 passes for 348 yards over the Golden Flashes' last three games. His best night came last week against Akron, when he finished with 156 yards and three touchdowns.

Sacramento State is poorly built to stop him. The Hornets rank 126th in passing EPA allowed, which measures expected points added per play. Their defense gives up big gains too, ranking 119th in explosiveness allowed. The 194.5 passing yards allowed per game (41st) mostly reflect opponents who never needed to throw.

The pass rush offers little help. Sac State's havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup, is 10.6%, which ranks 135th. That means Dru DeShields should have time. He threw for 294 yards and four scores against Akron and was named MAC co-offensive player of the week.

The off-field news adds to it. Alonzo Carter fired cornerbacks coach Dakari Monroe this week, less than a year after hiring him. Across the field, Kent State defensive coordinator Cherokee Valeria coached Sac State's defensive backs from 2019 to 2024, so he knows the program well.

Two run games going nowhere

Neither team can lean on the ground game with confidence. Kent State ranks 135th in rushing EPA and 134th in line yards, which credit the offensive line for the first few yards of each carry. Sacramento State's run defense gives the Flashes their best chance to fix that: it allows 177.0 rushing yards per game and ranks 115th in line yards allowed.

The Hornets' rushing attack has a stranger problem. Sac State has gone six games without a rushing touchdown and ranks 136th in rushing EPA. Isaiah Ene still averages 5.2 yards per carry, though, and Kent State's stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, ranks 112th. Ene can pick up yards between the 20s. The problem is turning those yards into points.

A Hornets team still searching

Sacramento State is 1-7 overall and 0-5 in its first MAC season, and sits 138th of 138 in SP+, FPI and SRS. The last three games have gone worst of all. The Hornets' offensive success rate, the share of plays that keep a drive on schedule, dropped to 29.8%, while opponents scored 40.0 points per game.

The record also came against a softer schedule. Sac State's FBS opponents average a -7.8 SP+, compared with -1.1 for Kent State's.

The quarterback situation adds doubt. Carson Conklin has dealt with a wrist injury since the opener and was ruled out for the Ohio game, and his status for Friday is unconfirmed. Jackson Sharman is the projected starter. He has averaged 5.7 yards per attempt this season.

There was one encouraging sign at Ball State. The Hornets led in the first half before giving up 20 unanswered points in an eight-minute stretch.

Kent State's finishing problem

The reason this spread isn't larger is Kent State's trouble finishing drives. The Flashes score 2.11 points per scoring opportunity, which ranks 137th, and their kickers have made just 3 of 9 field goals. Drives that stall at the 30 against this defense may end with nothing.

Sac State can't count on gifts either. The Hornets commit 1.75 turnovers per game (127th) and force few of their own. Their one exception is defender Boogsie Silvera, who has three interceptions in his last three games.

Where the number sits

The line opened at 10.5 and has moved toward Sacramento State to 8.5, with the total at 46.5. Our model goes the other way, pricing Kent State as a 9.8-point favorite and projecting roughly a 28-18 game. That gives the Hornets a 27% chance to win.

The matchup supports the model's lean: Kent State's passing game against a defense that can't pressure the quarterback. The open question is whether the Flashes turn those drives into touchdowns or stall into missed kicks.

Key players

  • Dru DeShields (Kent State): Threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns against Akron, his best game of the season.
  • Wayne Harris (Kent State): Has 348 receiving yards and three touchdowns over his last three games.
  • Hayden Dawahare (Kent State): Has three sacks over the last three games against a Sac State line that allows 2.0 sacks per game.
  • Jackson Sharman (Sacramento State): Has completed 53.9% of his passes over the last three games and is projected to start with Conklin's wrist status unconfirmed.
  • Isaiah Ene (Sacramento State): Averages 5.2 yards per carry, the most efficient part of a Hornets offense without a rushing touchdown in six games.
  • Boogsie Silvera (Sacramento State): Has three interceptions in his last three games, including two at Ball State.
