Toledo Rockets vs Sacramento State prediction: Richter's arm gives Toledo a clear edge, but 27.5 is steep

Toledo should throw at will against a Sacramento State defense with no pass rush, yet sloppy hidden yards have kept it from covering big numbers before.

Quick take
  • Toledo should dominate the line of scrimmage and the air. The real question is whether sloppy penalties and kicking let the margin fall short of 27.5.
  • John Alan Richter and a top-20 passing offense against a Sacramento State pass defense ranked 107th in EPA allowed and 120th in sacks.
  • Our number makes Toledo a 26.5-point favorite with a 51.4 total, nearly identical to the market.

Richter against no pass rush

Toledo's offense runs through John Alan Richter, and his season line is the cleanest thing in this matchup. He has thrown 17 touchdown passes against just 2 interceptions. The Rockets rank 19th in passing EPA (expected points added per play), and his line has allowed only 0.75 sacks per game, 7th in the country.

Sacramento State has little to throw at that protection. The Hornets average 1.22 sacks per game, 120th nationally. Their havoc rate (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup) ranks 130th. Their raw passing yards allowed rank a respectable 41st, but that number flatters them. Per snap, the pass defense ranks 107th in EPA allowed, and it ranks 121st in explosiveness allowed.

Richter is coming off 391 yards and three touchdowns against Western Michigan. Adjatay Dabbs was his main target that night with 124 receiving yards. Dabbs also caught two touchdowns.

The Hornets can't move the pile

The other side of the ball is just as lopsided. Sacramento State gains 2.56 line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the blockers create, and that ranks 134th. Its rushing EPA ranks 135th. That is a problem against a Toledo front that ranks 26th in line yards allowed and 25th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line.

Toledo's defense ranks 4th in success rate allowed, meaning opponents rarely stay on schedule. Over the last three games, the Hornets' offense has stayed on schedule on just 27.7% of plays. Andrew Zock has 8 sacks this season, and 4.5 of them came in his last three games.

Toledo's one defensive soft spot is the big play: it ranks 132nd in explosiveness allowed. Sacramento State is poorly built to take advantage, ranking 136th in offensive explosiveness. Isaiah Ene is its best chance. He ran for 107 yards and two scores against Kent State.

Short week, Senior Day, open QB

The schedule tilts further toward Toledo. The Rockets haven't played since beating Western Michigan on Oct. 24, giving them 11 days of rest. Sacramento State turns around on 5 days after its Oct. 30 win over Kent State.

That win gives the Hornets something to build on. They trailed 10-6 at halftime, then outscored Kent State 25-0 after the break. Donovan Turner's pick-six was the team's first defensive touchdown of the season. Wednesday is also Senior Day for 27 seniors, the Hornets' final home game and the debut of special uniforms made with the Wilton Rancheria tribe.

The quarterback picture is murky. Carson Conklin missed the Kent State game with a wrist injury, and his status for Toledo hasn't been reported. Jackson Sharman is the projected starter. He completes 56.1% of his passes at 5.6 yards per attempt.

Where 27.5 gets hard

Toledo has the better team by a wide margin, but its hidden yards keep games closer than they should be. The Rockets give up 74.0 penalty yards per game, 125th nationally. They have made only 8 of 12 field-goal tries. Their kick coverage allows 26.9 yards per return, which ranks 127th.

Those leaks have cost bettors before. Toledo closed at -21 at Ball State, won 39-24 and didn't cover. One week later, as a 19-point home favorite, it lost 8-23 to Buffalo. The Rockets are 4-3-1 against the spread this season.

Sacramento State's own mistakes help offset that. The Hornets turn it over 1.67 times per game, 125th in the country. Short fields off turnovers are the quickest route to a blowout.
