Ball State Cardinals vs UMass Minutemen prediction: Pop Watson's ankle decides whether UMass can stop its four-game slide
Ball State's defense ranks near the bottom of the country, but UMass needs a healthy quarterback to cash in, and his Wednesday status is still unconfirmed.
| Spread | Massachusetts -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 48.5 |
- UMass's stingy red-zone defense should keep this close, while Ball State's porous defense gives a healthy Watson room to work.
- Keldric Luster's scrambling gets a boost against a UMass front that ranks 107th in line yards allowed.
- Our number makes UMass a 4.7-point favorite, a shade more than the market's 3.5, with a 48.5 total that matches the book.
Everything runs through Watson
UMass has lost four straight, and the slide lines up with the ankle injury that knocked out William "Pop" Watson III on Oct. 10. Without him, the Minutemen fell to their third-string quarterback, freshman Aedan McCarthy, and lost 19-20 at the horn to Miami (OH). They dropped an 18-25 decision at Buffalo the next week.
Watson came back at UConn and threw 22 of 38 for 205 yards in a 35-16 loss. That's a quarterback shaking off rust, not one at full speed. His season line shows what UMass gets when he is right: a 69.6% completion rate and 7.4 yards per attempt, with just 2 interceptions. Before the injury he was also a running threat. He ran for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns against Sacramento State, then managed only 11 rushing yards at UConn.
His status for Wednesday is not confirmed. Ball State expects him to play and has named containing him a top defensive priority. UMass also lost wide receiver Dallas Elliott for the season after he began cancer treatment at Dana-Farber, which thins a passing game that already ranks 112th in yards per game.
A defense that gives up everything
If Watson is close to himself, the matchup sets up well for him. Ball State allows 0.248 EPA per play (expected points added per play), 133rd of 138. Opponents convert 43.3% of third downs against the Cardinals, 115th. The defense also allows 4.65 points per scoring opportunity, 135th, so drives that reach the 40 usually end in touchdowns.
The trouble is UMass's recent offense. Over the last three games the Minutemen managed -0.033 EPA per play and a 34.4% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule. They averaged 17.7 points. Most of that came without Watson, but third down has been a problem all season: UMass converts 32.3%, 125th nationally.
Luster's legs against a soft front
Ball State runs first and runs slowly, and its quarterback has become a big part of the ground game. Keldric Luster ran for 203 yards over his last three games, including 125 yards and a touchdown at Bowling Green. TJ Horton has 9 rushing touchdowns on just 68 carries.
UMass's front is where this defense bends. The Minutemen rank 107th in line yards allowed, which measures how much push opponents get up front, and 94th in stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line. They rank 117th in tackles for loss per game. Still, UMass tightens near the goal line. It allows just 2.84 points per opportunity, 19th, and ranks 25th in yards per play allowed.
Treat Ball State's recent surge with caution. Its last-three form looks strong, with a 46.8% success rate, but two of those opponents rank 131st and 139th in SP+. On the other side, UMass's defensive numbers came against a schedule with an average opponent SP+ of -10.7, compared with -2.4 for Ball State's.
Turnovers and return yards
UMass protects the ball. It gives it away 0.75 times per game, 15th nationally, and takes it away 1.62 times per game, 23rd. Jahmad Harmon has 3 interceptions. Ball State forces 0.75 takeaways per game, 121st, and Luster has thrown 6 interceptions.
The return game could swing field position. UMass ranks 3rd in punt return average and Ball State ranks 7th, but Ball State allows only 2.2 yards per punt return. UMass's soft spot is kick coverage, where it allows 26.2 yards per return, 123rd. Neither kicker is reliable: Ball State has made 5 of 8 field goals and UMass 11 of 16.
The market and our number
The line opened at UMass -3.5 and hasn't moved across 18 books, with the total at 48.5. Ball State has covered five of eight this season, including each of its last four. UMass is 4-3-1 against the spread.
Our model makes UMass a 4.74-point favorite and gives it a 62.0% chance to win. It projects roughly 26.6 to 21.9 and matches the market's total exactly. For the first half, our fair line is UMass -2.96 with a total of 25.11.
