Central Michigan Chippewas vs Eastern Michigan Eagles prediction: Without Angel Flores, Central Michigan's ground game hits Eastern Michigan's best unit

The Chippewas lost their running quarterback just as they face the one part of Eastern Michigan's roster built to stop the run, in a rivalry game that moves indoors to Ford Field.

Quick take
  • Expect a tight, grinding game between two offenses with quarterback questions, priced at just 2 points.
  • Central Michigan's push up front, 25th in line yards, against an Eastern Michigan front that ranks 39th in stuff rate.
  • Our model makes Eastern Michigan a 0.7-point favorite with a 52% win chance, a shade closer than the market's 2.

Life After Angel Flores

The 104th meeting in the MAC's longest-running series arrives with Central Michigan rebuilding its offense on the fly. Matt Drinkall said after the 28-27 loss to Miami (OH) that Angel Flores is out for the rest of the season following ankle surgery. Flores was the engine of a run-first, slow offense, and he ran for 618 yards before the injury.

Jadyn Glasser, who started against Miami, gets the job again. He inherits a line that moves people. Central Michigan ranks 25th in line yards per carry, a measure of the push the offensive line creates on runs, and that helps explain 169.2 rushing yards per game. The passing game is the opposite story: the Chippewas rank 133rd in passing EPA (expected points added per play).

That is why this matchup matters. Eastern Michigan's front stops 21.2% of runs at or behind the line, which ranks 39th. If that front takes away the ground game, Glasser has to win on schedule through the air, which this offense has not done all year.

There is one opening. Langston Lewis caught passes for 163 yards and a touchdown in the Miami game Glasser started, his best day of the season. Eastern Michigan ranks 125th in passing EPA allowed, so Lewis is the swing piece if the Chippewas fall behind the chains.

The Eagles Should Run

Flip the field and the weak spot belongs to Central Michigan. The Chippewas rank 137th in line yards allowed per carry and 131st in stuff rate, so opposing backs routinely reach the second level untouched.

Eastern Michigan has not been built to cash in on that. The Eagles run for 105.6 yards per game, 130th nationally, and project as a pass-first, up-tempo team with Brogan McCaughey at quarterback. Noah Kim is still recovering from an undisclosed injury, and his status for Wednesday is unconfirmed.

Throwing into this secondary is the harder road. Central Michigan allows 180.1 passing yards per game, 25th, and ranks 13th in explosiveness allowed, meaning big gains through the air have been rare. Justin Taylor has three interceptions.

The crack is third down. The Chippewas allow conversions on 51.0% of them, 136th. If Eastern Michigan commits to Amareon Blue on early downs, it can live in short-yardage situations against a defense that cannot get off the field.

Pressure and Hidden Yards

A new quarterback behind a line that gives up sacks is a problem. Central Michigan allows 2.38 sacks per game, 105th, and Quincy Byas has 5.0 sacks for Eastern Michigan this season. He has been hot lately too, with 2.5 over his last three games.

The kicking game leans Central Michigan's way in one spot and away in another. The Chippewas average 24.2 yards per kick return, and Eastern Michigan ranks 124th in kick returns allowed, which matters for an Eagles offense that starts its drives at the 26.3-yard line on average, 130th. Against that, Central Michigan has converted just 89.5% of its extra points, a real concern in a game priced this close.

Schedule, Series and the Number

Central Michigan's 3-5 record came against the tougher slate. Its FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of -1.0, while Eastern Michigan's sit at -8.8. Both teams arrive on 11 days of rest, and both offenses have slipped lately, posting negative EPA per play over their last three games.

Central Michigan leads the series 65-32-6, and this is the second leg of the Michigan MAC Trophy chase. The last Ford Field meeting, in 2004, went four overtimes.

The market opened with Eastern Michigan favored by 1.5 and has nudged to 2, with a total of 46.2. Our number has the Eagles by 0.7 with a 52% win chance, so we see this closer than the market does, and we land almost exactly on the total.
