TCU Horned Frogs vs Arizona Wildcats prediction: Noah Fifita's thinned receiver room runs into TCU's stingy defense

Arizona's passing game has carried a 6-2 season, but it lost Tre Spivey for the year, may be without R.J. Mosley, and now faces a TCU defense that ranks among the nation's best by every efficiency measure.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 7, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Arizona's passing should move the ball enough against TCU's defense; TCU's broken run game and shaky protection likely keep it chasing.
  • Isaiah Mizell against a TCU secondary allowing just 174.6 passing yards per game.
  • Our number makes Arizona a 9.5-point favorite, two points beyond the market, and likes the Wildcats in the first half.

Fifita's toughest test yet

Noah Fifita makes his 43rd consecutive start Friday night, and he arrives hotter than he has been all year. Over his last three games he has completed 74.5% of his passes at 10.5 yards per attempt, including 417 yards in the loss at Texas Tech. No. 24 Arizona throws for 322.0 yards per game, sixth in the country, and converts 52.4% of third downs, seventh.

The weapons around him have changed, though. Tre Spivey broke his foot in early October and is out for the season. R.J. Mosley was carted off at Texas Tech with a left-leg injury, and the school hasn't announced a diagnosis or timeline. Giovanni Richardson returns after missing two games with a leg injury, which helps, but the load falls heavily on Isaiah Mizell, who has 499 receiving yards and four touchdowns across his last three games.

TCU's defense is the reason this is a real game. The Frogs allow 14.1 points per game, eighth nationally, and rank sixth in EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each snap moves the scoreboard). Their success rate allowed, the share of opponent plays that stay on schedule, ranks seventh. Against the pass specifically they rank 19th in EPA allowed and hold opponents to 31.4% on third down. Arizona's offense has not seen a unit like this often: its FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of just 0.2, while TCU's schedule checks in at 4.2.

TCU's run game has no answers

If TCU's defense keeps this close, its offense has to finish the job, and that is where the Frogs fall apart. They rank 125th in rushing EPA and 105th in line yards per carry, the yardage credited to the blockers up front. TCU fired offensive line coach A.J. Ricker after the West Virginia loss in late October, and the ground game hasn't recovered: the team averaged 19.7 points per game over its last three.

The backfield is thinning too. Jon Denman is out, and Jeremy Payne is questionable after practicing Tuesday. That pushes more onto Jaden Craig, whose last-three completion rate has slipped to 59.8%. Against Kansas he went 13 of 29 for 141 yards before saving the night with a 17-yard go-ahead run with 1:09 left, after TCU trailed 13-0 at halftime.

Protection compounds it. TCU allows 2.62 sacks per game (113th), and Arizona's front gets home 2.5 times a game, 34th nationally. Chase Kennedy leads that rush with five sacks. When TCU does reach scoring range, it averages 3.15 points per opportunity, 112th, so drives that stall into field goals are a pattern, not an accident.

Where Arizona can bleed

Arizona's defense ranks 23rd in EPA allowed, but it has one glaring flaw: it ranks 131st in explosiveness allowed, meaning the plays opponents do hit tend to go a long way. Starting cornerback Jay'Vion Cole is out, multiple Wildcats are questionable including another starting defensive back, and defensive linemen Kevin Moorer Jr. and Ezra Funa are also out.

That is the door for TCU's passing game, which still averages 275.9 yards per game, 21st nationally. Jordan Dwyer has 309 yards over his last three games, including 150 at Baylor. TCU's best path is a handful of shots downfield rather than sustained drives.

The Frogs have a pass rusher to exploit too. Koron Hayward has 5.5 sacks in six games, and Arizona allows 2.75 sacks per game, 117th. Special teams offer one more hidden edge: Arizona allows 31.8 yards per kick return, 136th of 137, though TCU's own return game ranks 122nd.

What the number says

The market opened Arizona -8.5 and has moved toward TCU to -7.5, with a total of 45.5. Our model leans further toward Arizona, making the Wildcats a 9.5-point favorite with a 73% win probability and a fair total of 45.35, right on the market. The projected score lands near 27.5 to 17.2.

The first half is where our numbers speak most clearly. We price Arizona at -5.86 for the half against a market line of -4.5, a fit for a script where Fifita's passing builds an early lead while TCU's offense sputters before halftime, as it did against Kansas. TCU won the last meeting 49-28 in 2024, but neither offense resembles that game now.

What to watch

  • Mizell's target share: with Spivey gone and Mosley's status unclear, how TCU's secondary handles him decides Arizona's ceiling.
  • TCU's backfield: if Payne can't go, expect Craig to carry more of the run game himself.
  • Hayward against Arizona's tackles: TCU's best route to an upset is sacks that kill Arizona drives.
  • Arizona's depleted secondary: watch for TCU's deep shots to Dwyer.
