Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Illinois Fighting Illini prediction: Nebraska's sputtering offense gets a soft landing spot in Champaign
Three straight one-score losses have exposed the Huskers' offense, and Friday brings their easiest defensive matchup in a month against a surging Illinois team.
| Spread | Nebraska -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 47.8 |
- Nebraska's defense should contain Illinois; the game turns on whether Colandrea and the run game finally convert against a struggling Illini defense.
- Nebraska's run game, fifth in rushing EPA, against an Illinois defense ranked 100th of 138 in rushing EPA allowed.
- Our number has Illinois +5.9 against the market's +6.5, with the total right on the line. No meaningful gap.
A month without points
Nebraska's last month has been all defense and no finish. The Huskers lost 20-17 to Indiana and 17-14 at Oregon. Then came a 17-10 home loss to Washington, the third straight defeat by a touchdown or less, after leading with under two minutes left.
The offense owns most of that. Over those three games it produced negative EPA (expected points added per play) and stayed on schedule on just 35.9% of snaps. Anthony Colandrea threw 5 interceptions in that stretch. He averaged 5.7 yards per attempt, well off his season mark of 6.9.
Dana Holgorsen blamed players "pressing" against Washington and added, "It's on me for not recognizing that." He'll call this one from the press box, a move he described as "searching for a few more points."
Schedule explains some of the slump. Indiana and Oregon rank 6th and 12th in SP+. Illinois is a different assignment: its defense ranks 123rd of 138 in EPA allowed per play. It sits 118th in success rate allowed, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule.
The fix starts on the ground
Nebraska's best path back runs between the tackles and around the edge with Colandrea's legs. The Huskers rank 5th nationally in rushing EPA, the clearest strength of an offense that has struggled to throw.
Illinois ranks 100th in rushing EPA allowed. Its defense also creates little chaos: havoc (tackles for loss, sacks, takeaways and pass breakups) comes on just 13.6% of plays, 110th in the country. Without negative plays, Nebraska can stay ahead of the chains and keep Colandrea out of the long-yardage throws that produced those interceptions.
Jamal Rule is the back to watch. He averages 6.3 yards per carry for the season but just 4.2 over the last three games, a drop that tracks with the offense as a whole. Offensive lineman Gunnar Gottula, who missed the Washington game, is questionable.
Houser returns to a wall
Illinois got its quarterback back sooner than anyone expected. Katin Houser broke his throwing hand, missed three weeks and returned against Maryland, throwing for 223 yards in a win sealed by Ethan Moczulski's field goal as time expired. He carried no injury designation Tuesday. His 7.7 yards per attempt this season gives the Illini a steadier passer than Nebraska has had lately.
What's waiting for him is the best part of Nebraska's team. The Huskers rank 4th in passing EPA allowed. Opponents convert just 21.4% of their third downs, the best rate in the country. Nebraska also averages 2.88 sacks per game, 14th nationally, though edge rusher Anthony Jones remains out.
The back end has questions too. Free safety Jamir Conn has missed two games and is questionable; Rob Aurich said "He was at practice this week" but still has to "go through a couple more check marks." Nebraska ranks 92nd in explosiveness allowed, so a successful play against this defense tends to hurt. Illinois found exactly that against Oregon, winning 21-10 as a double-digit underdog.
Kicks, flags and returns
The margins favor Illinois. Nebraska has made 5/10 field goals, 132nd in percentage, which matters for an offense that has struggled lately. Close games have a way of finding a kicker.
Illinois is also among the cleanest teams in the country at 35.0 penalty yards per game, 6th nationally. Nebraska gives away 69.4 per game, 116th. And the Illini average 21.6 yards per punt return, 4th in the country, a weapon on a night when Nebraska may punt more than it would like.
Where the number lands
Nebraska is a 6.5-point favorite, unchanged since opening, with the total at 47.8. The Huskers have been a strong spread team at 6-1-1, though the miss came against Washington as a favorite.
Our model largely agrees with the market. It projects Nebraska 26.9-21.0 and gives Illinois a 35.0% chance to win at home, a fair line of Illinois +5.9. The case for the favorite rests on the run game finding the space the last three opponents denied it; the case for Illinois rests on Houser, the kicking edge and a defense that only needs Nebraska to keep stalling.
