South Florida Bulls vs East Carolina Pirates prediction: South Florida's quarterback question runs into East Carolina's wall up front

With Michael Van Buren Jr.'s status unknown, a USF offense that already struggles to create big plays faces one of the country's best run-stuffing fronts, while ECU's turnover habit hands the Bulls a way back.

Quick take
  • A low-margin grind: two offenses that struggle to create big plays, decided by which side commits the costly mistake first.
  • USF's run game against an ECU front that ranks 3rd in stuff rate, likely with backup Luke Kromenhoek at quarterback.
  • Our model has it near pick'em, ECU at 49.0% to win and a fair total of 45.5, matching the market.

A backup against a wall

South Florida has a bowl ticket punched and a path to the American title game still open. What it may not have Friday night in Greenville is its starting quarterback.

Michael Van Buren Jr. left the UAB win in the second quarter with an injury USF hasn't detailed. Brian Hartline did not name a starter at Tuesday's press conference, and after UAB he said the staff would know more "in the coming days." Luke Kromenhoek took over in that game and is the likelier option this week.

Van Buren was the steady piece of a modest offense. He hasn't thrown an interception all season, a big reason USF turns it over just 0.5 times per game (4th of 138). Even with him, the Bulls pass for 166.6 yards per game, which ranks 129th. Their explosiveness, the average value of their successful plays, ranks 134th. This offense grinds instead: its success rate (share of plays that keep it on schedule) is 45.8%, 40th nationally.

A grinding offense needs running lanes, and ECU slams them shut. The Pirates stuff 28.7% of runs at or behind the line, 3rd in the country. They allow 2.4 line yards per carry, a measure of the push a front gives up, and that ranks 8th. D.J. Crowther, USF's lead back, has averaged 3.9 yards per carry over the last three games. If the run stalls, a backup quarterback is left throwing on long downs with no vertical game to lean on.

Where ECU gives it back

The Pirates' offense is the shakier unit in this game. ECU converts 31.2% of third downs, 130th nationally. It ranks 126th in turnovers per game. Its havoc allowed, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, fumble, interception or pass breakup, ranks 121st.

That is the opening for a USF defense built to disrupt. The Bulls rank 13th in stuff rate, and C.J. Hicks is coming in hot. All 5.0 of his sacks came in the last three games, including 4.0 against UAB, a performance that earned him the American's Defensive Player of the Week award.

Mitch Griffis reportedly returned to the starting job for the Temple win after Emory Williams started multiple October games. Griffis has thrown 5 interceptions against 4 touchdowns this season. Against Temple he managed 130 passing yards and threw a pick. Pressure plus a turnover-prone quarterback is how USF's defense can manufacture the points its offense may not.

Engleman's narrow window

ECU's best weapon is TJ Engleman, who has 689 rushing yards at 6.6 per carry. The problem is the defense in front of him. USF ranks 16th in line yards allowed and 18th in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play). The Bulls also rank 3rd in explosiveness allowed, so the long runs that pad Engleman's average will be scarce.

The air may offer more. Landon Sides has 204 receiving yards over the last three games, including 130 at Memphis. Passing EPA allowed is USF's softest defensive number at 49th.

ECU's own secondary takes a hit. Safety David Coleman Jr. is out for the season with a fractured fibula, suffered when an official slipped into him between plays at Temple. The Pirates rank 24th in passing EPA allowed, though USF's passing game is poorly built to test a thinner back end.

Hidden yards, softer résumé

USF's record deserves some skepticism. Its FBS opponents carry an average SP+ of -8.7, against -3.4 for ECU's. The Bulls also lost at home to Temple as 5.5-point favorites.

Where USF does win is the margins. It starts drives at an average of the 31.8-yard line, 16th nationally, and plays clean, disciplined football. ECU gets almost nothing back on punts: its 2.2-yard return average ranks 135th. In a game this tight, a few short fields could settle it.

The market and our number

USF is a 0.5-point favorite and the total sits at 45.5, with neither number moving since open. Our model lands in the same spot: a fair total of 45.5 and a projected score of 23.0 to 22.5 for USF. The market has this priced where we do, so the edge has to come from the quarterback news.
