East Carolina Pirates vs UAB prediction: East Carolina's tackle-for-loss machine puts UAB's ground game on notice
The Blazers can't throw and need to run, and the Pirates lead the country at blowing up plays behind the line.
| Spread | East Carolina -4.5 |
|---|
- ECU's front should keep UAB behind schedule while Engleman runs at a defense ranked 134th in stuff rate.
- UAB's run game, led by Braylon McReynolds, against an ECU front that leads the FBS in tackles for loss.
- Our model doesn't price this game yet.
UAB runs into a wall
UAB has a narrow path to moving the ball, and East Carolina is built to close it. The Blazers rank 129th in passing yards per game at 155.8. Everything runs through the ground game instead, which sits 51st at 179.5 yards per game.
That plan collides with the most disruptive front in the country by one measure: ECU leads the FBS with 10.2 tackles for loss per game. The Pirates are 4th in stuff rate (the share of runs stopped at or behind the line), stuffing 29.9% of carries. They also rank 4th in line yards allowed, a measure of how much push an offensive line gets, at 2.15 per carry.
Roderick Robinson II has handled the heaviest load, but 93 carries have produced 4.3 yards apiece. Braylon McReynolds has been the sharper back lately. He has 3 rushing touchdowns and 6.4 yards per carry over the last three games.
If ECU wins early downs, the game lands on Ryder Burton's arm. Burton has completed 55.4% of his passes this season. He has thrown 5 interceptions against 4 touchdowns. Mortensen waved off questions about a quarterback change on Monday, saying "We got a ton of confidence in Ryder Burton." The Pirates' havoc rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup, is 20.8%, 12th nationally. UAB gives up 2.67 sacks per game, which ranks 116th.
Engleman against a soft middle
The other side of the ball tilts just as hard, in ECU's favour. UAB ranks 134th in stuff rate at 11.8%. The Blazers are 133rd in line yards allowed. Opponents have run for 190.8 yards per game against them, 123rd nationally.
TJ Engleman is the back to exploit it. He has 364 yards on 40 carries over his last three games. That works out to 9.1 yards per carry. Against Rice he ran for 136 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Pirates have reason to stay on the ground. UAB allows 126.0 passing yards per game, 2nd in the FBS. Emory Williams, who won the job over Mitch Griffis, has 506 passing yards and 5 touchdowns over his last three games, but he doesn't need to carry this one.
Where ECU drives die
East Carolina's offense has a glaring flaw: it converts just 27.0% of third downs, 132nd nationally. It also ranks 128th in havoc allowed, so negative plays keep putting the Pirates in long-yardage spots. Penalties add to it, with 70.6 penalty yards per game ranking 116th.
UAB's best answer is Marlin Dean, who has 5.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss. If he can put ECU into third-and-long, the Pirates' worst habit shows up.
Neither team finishes well. ECU ranks 113th in points per scoring opportunity, and UAB is worse at 122nd. The Blazers at least have a reliable kicker, making 14 of 16 field goals. ECU is 4/6. In a game of stalled drives, three points instead of zero could decide it.
Thursday night, short week
Both teams come in on just five days of rest, with a homecoming crowd and an ESPN audience in Birmingham. UAB needs to show it can play a full game. At Memphis, the Blazers piled up more than 250 yards in the first half and held the Tigers to 10 points. Then Memphis won the second half 28-0.
Read ECU's recent dominance with care. Over its last three games, the defense allowed 12.7 points per game and a 20.5% success rate. Those games came against Old Dominion, North Carolina Central and Rice, with Old Dominion ranked 109th in SP+ and Rice 121st. The Pirates also lost at home to App State as favourites.
The ratings still separate these teams. ECU sits 78th in SP+, and UAB is 115th.

Numbers that matter
| ECU tackles for loss per game | 10.2 | Ranks 1st in the FBS and threatens a UAB offense that depends on the run. |
|---|---|---|
| UAB stuff rate | 11.8% | Ranks 134th, which leaves room for Engleman to get past the line. |
| ECU third-down conversion | 27.0% | Ranks 132nd and is the biggest drag on the Pirates' offense. |
| UAB passing yards per game | 155.8 | Ranks 129th, so the Blazers have no easy fallback if the run stalls. |
| Engleman yards per carry, last 3 | 9.1 | Strong recent form for a back running behind a line ranked 121st in line yards. |
