Coastal Carolina's protection ranks near the bottom of FBS, and App State brings one of the Sun Belt's most disruptive fronts to Conway.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 17, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • A low-margin Friday night slog: two top-10 takeaway defenses, two shaky offenses, and a game likely decided by turnovers and field position.
  • App State's front, 14th in tackles for loss, against a Coastal line that ranks 128th in sacks allowed per game.
  • Our model doesn't price this game yet.

Where Bailey gets hit

Coastal Carolina has won every meeting with App State since 2022, including a 45-37 shootout in Boone last October. This version of the Chanticleers is 2-4 and leaning on a quarterback who spends too much time on the ground.

Coastal allows 3.17 sacks per game, 128th of 138 FBS teams. Its havoc allowed rate, the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup, sits at 19.1%, 130th. App State's defense lives in that space. The Mountaineers post a havoc rate of 18.5% (28th) and average 7.4 tackles for loss per game (14th).

Caleb Sandstrom is the problem Coastal has to solve, with 5.0 sacks in five games. Deuce Bailey has thrown 13 touchdowns, but his accuracy is slipping. He completed 51.8% of his passes over the last three games and went 8 of 18 at Marshall. A quarterback under that much pressure against a defense that ranks 12th in explosiveness allowed won't find many easy chunk plays.

Singleton's health and his last outing

App State's offense runs through Malachi Singleton's arm. He's averaging 8.2 yards per attempt on the season, and the Mountaineers rank 48th in passing EPA (expected points added per play). That's the cleanest edge in this game, because Coastal's pass defense ranks 112th in passing EPA allowed.

The question is which Singleton shows up. In a rain-soaked 10-3 loss to Old Dominion he went 5 of 23 for 72 yards. Loggains said Singleton sat out the final drive with an injury, and backup Henry Hasselbeck threw the closing interception. Singleton's player page lists him as active, but there's been no further update.

The slide is broader than one wet night. App State's offensive success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule, fell to 34.8% over the last three games. The Mountaineers convert 31.2% on third down, 122nd nationally.

Two run games, opposite directions

App State can't run the ball. Its line yards per carry, a measure of how much push the offensive line creates, is 2.68, 123rd in FBS. This is the week that could change. Coastal's stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, is 15.6% (113th), and the Chanticleers allow 189.7 rushing yards per game, 122nd.

Coastal's ground game has more bite. Its offensive line ranks 30th in line yards at 3.31 per carry. Dominic Knicely ran for 169 yards at Marshall, including a 70-yard touchdown on the first snap of the second half. He runs into a real wall here, though. App State allows 2.61 line yards per carry, also 30th, and its stuff rate of 23.1% ranks 26th.

Turnovers and hidden yards

Both defenses take the ball away. Coastal averages 2.17 takeaways per game (8th) and forced six at Marshall. App State is right behind at 2.0 per game (9th). In a game between two teams rated outside the top 95 by SP+, a short field could decide it.

The return game tilts toward the home side. Coastal averages 23.1 yards per punt return, 5th in FBS. App State returns punts for 3.7 yards, 129th, and allows 25.0 yards per kick return, 119th.

App State's 3-2 record also comes against softer opposition. Its FBS opponents average an SP+ of -10.3, against -4.8 for Coastal's. The Mountaineers lost to Old Dominion as a 9.5-point favourite, and they have dropped their Sun Belt opener for the third straight season.

What to watch

  • Early downs for Bailey: if Coastal falls behind schedule, App State's pass rush feasts.
  • Singleton's first few throws: any sign of the injury changes the whole App State attack.
  • App State's runs on first down: the Mountaineers have a rare chance to move a weak run defense.
  • Coastal's punt returns: an edge that could hand the Chanticleers a short field.

Key players

  • Malachi Singleton (App State): Averages 8.2 yards per attempt this season but went 5 of 23 for 72 yards against Old Dominion before leaving with an injury.

  • Sam Pickett III (App State): Top receiver with 333 yards and three touchdowns, including 97 yards at NC State.
