Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles prediction: Teagan Moore leads a reloaded WKU into Tobin Anderson's rebuilt Cookeville
Two heavily remade rosters open in Cookeville, and the only proven piece belongs to Western Kentucky.
| Spread | Western Kentucky -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 159.5 |
- Expect a feeling-out game between two remade rosters, with WKU's returning star and foul-line habits giving it the steadier floor.
- Teagan Moore against whatever Tennessee Tech's 12 newcomers throw at him; he just scored 30 on Indiana.
- No line posted yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings had WKU 158th and Tennessee Tech 309th nationally.
Two programs starting over
Both benches will be full of new faces. Western Kentucky added nine newcomers, six of them transfers, including backcourt pieces Sharron Young (Akron), Noah Norgaard (UNC Greensboro) and Trevion LaBeaux (East Carolina). Hank Plona is entering his third season after an 18-14 year and a third-place C-USA finish.
Tennessee Tech went further. Tobin Anderson, hired in March 2026 to replace John Pelphrey, has 12 new players in his first season, and the Golden Eagles have moved to the Southern Conference after missing the OVC tournament last year. This is a non-conference date, but it is Anderson's early chance to show what his rebuild looks like at home.
With that much turnover, last season's team numbers are a rough sketch, not a forecast. They matter most for WKU, which brings back its best player.
Moore is the fixed point
Teagan Moore, the preseason C-USA Player of the Year, already looks ready. He scored 30 points in the Oct. 25 exhibition against Indiana, a 79-74 loss in which WKU led for most of the night before Indiana tied it at 63-63 with 5:39 left.
That exhibition lineup was Hackman, Boone, Moore, EJ Walker and Emondrek Erkins-Ford, though one game's starting five isn't a commitment. Cam Haffner reportedly won a temporary injunction in Georgia granting him a fifth year for 2026-27; WKU hasn't been found confirming it, so his status is worth checking closer to tip. Tennessee Tech has no reported injuries, and its exhibition at Southern Illinois had no recap available.
WKU scores the hard way
Last season's Hilltoppers were an odd offense. Their effective field goal percentage (which counts threes 1.5 times) was 48.1%, 332nd in Division I, and they made only 46.0% of their twos. Yet their offensive efficiency ranked 90th.
The gap came from possessions and free throws. WKU turned it over on just 15.1% of possessions (62nd) and drew fouls at a free throw rate of 41.8% (31st), then made 75.9% at the line. If the new pieces keep that formula, WKU can win a game it doesn't shoot well.
Fouls and turnovers decide it
The same habit cut against WKU on defense. Its opponents posted a free throw rate of 45.5%, 354th of 365, so a Tech team that attacks the rim has a path to cheap points. Tech's defense, by contrast, kept opponents off the line, ranking 69th in opponent free throw rate.
Ball security is where Tech struggled most. Its turnover rate of 19.2% ranked 328th last season, while WKU forced turnovers at an 18.1% clip. With a dozen new players learning a new coach's system, early-season giveaways are the clearest danger for the home side.
Setting and the number
Tip is Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. ET at the Hooper Eblen Center on ESPN+. WKU won last season's meeting 82-70 in Bowling Green.
No spread or total has been posted. When one arrives, the baseline is last season's final adjusted efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents): WKU sat at +0.9 net, Tech at -13.9. Both rosters have changed enough that those figures describe programs more than these teams.

- Teagan Moore (Western Kentucky): Scored 30 points in the 79-74 exhibition loss to Indiana on Oct. 25.
- Cam Haffner (Western Kentucky): Reportedly granted a fifth year for 2026-27 through a temporary injunction in Georgia, still unconfirmed by the school.
Numbers that matter
| WKU free throw rate, last season | 41.8% | Ranked 31st nationally and propped up an offense that shot poorly from the floor. |
|---|---|---|
| WKU opponent free throw rate, last season | 45.5% | Ranked 354th, giving Tech a route to points at the line. |
| Tech turnover rate, last season | 19.2% | Ranked 328th, a weakness that a brand-new roster may struggle to fix right away. |
| Tech new players | 12 | Tobin Anderson's first roster is almost entirely new, so last season's numbers are a loose guide. |
| Moore vs. Indiana | 30 | WKU's returning star arrives in form after the final exhibition. |
